[Termes IGN] modèle orienté objetRésumé : (Auteur) In 1991, an experiment began at IGN at the COGIT laboratory. Its objective was to examine the potential of object-oriented technology in manipulating and modelling geographical objects. From an experimental point of view, a prototype has been developed on top of a commercial DBMS, namely O2, from (^Technology. The prototype has been called GeO2- This article gives an account of the most prominent experiments that have been carried out at this stage of development. We concentrate on the management of large volume of data and look at processes which could be affected by it: loading, visualizing, accessing to (through a spatial index). A test of portability on C++ storage system is also mentioned. Then results of our experiments allow us to shed new light on object-oriented technology. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (editeur) This text is the inaugural book in Taylor and Francis's GISDATA series, and is derived from the specialist workshop convened under the auspices of the European Science Foundation's GISDATA Scientific Programme. Generalisation is an integrating tool for the analysis and presentation of spatial data. Effective spatial data analysis requires multiple views of the world at various scales with different thematic layers of representation. Generalisation is a key mechanism in this process, as it filters out information which is required for particular scales or layers; hence it is critical to implement full and comprehensive generalisation capabilities in a GIS, something with which few current GIS are equipped.; This book overviews the core and as-yet unresolved issues surrounding the achievement of this goal, and presents various alternatives - both speculative views and practical examples - in the areas of automated generalisation, vis-a-vis problems such as object simplification and placement. At the same time it distinguishes between modelling with generalisation and graphical representation, and adopts a model-building perspective. It also describes artificial intelligence techniques for implementing automated generalised routines, and addresses issues of data quality and production.; The text is organized into six parts: an introduction; generic issue; object-orientated methods and knowledge-based modelling; knowledge acquisition and representation; data quality; and operation and implementation. [Termes IGN] réseau sémantiqueIndex. décimale : 35.20 Traitement d'image Résumé : (Auteur) Every intelligent system has to rely on knowledge in order to act (relatively) autonomous. The basic problem is to bring the knowledge into the system - also known as knowledge acquisition. This process is usually done manually, namely by gathering the relevant information through interviews with experts. In this manner the knowledge of a certain domain is structured and stored in a so-called knowledge base. A disadvantage of such knowledge based systems (or expert systems) is, that the system only acts basing on its stored knowledge - even slight deviations from the given facts lead to failures. Thus every possibility has to be thought of in advance and fixed into the system.
Also in image understanding a lot of information has to be known before an automatic process can start. An important part of it is the knowledge about the objects in the image. Thus all possible appearing objects in a scene have to be known in advance and described in a way, that they can be used by automatic processes. A more flexible method of knowledge acquisition is to imitate the human learning process by using techniques from Machine Learning. In this thesis the method "Learning from Examples" is used to derive descriptions (models) of objects for image interpretation.
The implemented approach is organized in an object-oriented way and consists of an integrated process of learning and interpretation. The learning component itself is the program IDS, which derives concepts from given examples. Concepts which can be learned are both object descriptions and also relations between objects - which are usually hard both to define and to acquire. Thus the system allows to gain complex object models. Starting from an uninterpreted scene, in the course of the process object models are continuously acquired and refined, until characteristic and discriminating descriptions for all the object in the scene are gained. In this way the process results in a complete scene description but, more important, also in a collection of abstract object models of the scene. An additional important feature of the procedure is the possibility to determine also complex object classes in an iterative manner.
The system is semi-automatic in the sense that control is guided both by the objects and a so-called teacher, who shows examples and counter-examples for a concept to be learned. The system is verified with examples from automatic map interpretation. The novelty of this approach lies in an integrated, iterative process of learning and interpretation.
