The development of a single geographical feature could destroy the geographical correlation. It is necessary to establish collaborative generalization models suitable for multiple features. However, existing road network generalization methods for mapping purposes do not fully consider residential areas. Compared with road networks, residential areas have a higher priority in cartographic generalization. In this regard, this study proposes a road network generalization method constrained by residential areas. First, the roads and settlements obtained from clustering residential areas were classified. Next, the importance of the settlements was evaluated and certain settlements were selected as the control features. Subsequently, a geographical network with the settlements as the nodes was built, and the traffic paths between adjacent settlements were searched. Finally, redundant paths between the settlements were simplified, and the visual continuity and topological connectivity were checked. The data of a 1:50,000 road network and residential areas were used as the experimental data. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method preserves the overall structure and relative density characteristics of the road network, as well as the geographical correlation between the road network and residential areas. Based on the raw geographic information system (GIS) data laid out as sparse polylines with attributes, we compute a more adequate functional description for real-time simulation of on-road vehicle animation. The proposed approach begins with a filtering/subdivision module where the raw polylines are transformed into a graph of functional road segments as arcs and the nodes as intersections. Then, the vehicle speed profile is computed based on its dynamics, its neighborhood and the curvature profile of the road. Afterward, a multi-agent system is proposed in order to handle a large number of simulated vehicle/driver couples. Finally, we deploy a 3D rendering engine to display the computed 3D simulation on screen. The resulting model satisfies most of the real road features for traffic simulation including road interchanges, roundabouts, intersections, lanes, etc. More importantly, the simulated driving qualitatively mimics the real behavior of the drivers/vehicles on the road as can be seen in the accompanying video (RTSP video). We also validate our findings with a technical assessment based on macroscopic and microscopic traffic simulation metrics in several road traffic scenarios. While tactile maps can be a medium for appropriating this complex space, they benefit from being complemented by audio information. In this paper we propose a data model to describe an intersection, the paths that allow to cross it, and their accessibility attributes. We also present methods to generate this model automatically from OpenStreetMap, by inferring missing data through graph analysis techniques. Finally, we present an implementation, the evaluation of which confirms the ability of the model to generate a compliant description for intersections with enough data. This is particularly the case for realtime mobile crowd-sourcing data often available in indoor and outdoor environments. Such data offers many opportunities for analysing human mobility, especially when associated with multidimensional contextual information. Considering the diversity of multi-environment spaces and where mobility occurs, raises several data modelling, management and processing research challenges.When associated with multiple contextual information, indoor and outdoor mobility analysis stresses the need for appropriate and flexible data abstractions at the modelling level to represent the spatial, temporal and semantic data that arise in a smart city environment. While recent approaches often considered this issue using the common stops and moves model, this does not completely cover the multi-dimensional contextual information that arises in real-time on humans navigating through indoor and outdoor spaces. It also increases the need for computing systems and data architectures to process spatio-temporal data in a timely manner when searching for complex mobility events of interest. Despite the ability to represent spatio-temporal events, such systems require well-defined and flexible data manipulation languages to support abstraction and composition mechanisms for analysing urban mobilities.This thesis aims to provide the necessary constructs for analysing mobile crowd-sensed information that arises in indoor and outdoor spaces. In order to better understand urban mobility data in batch and real-time, we consider a broad range of contextual information that can be associated with mobility data. We introduce an indoor and outdoor spatial data model represented as a multi-layered graph and constructed with crowd-sourced trajectory data. The novelty of the approach lies in the fact that it provides a homogeneous and flexible hierarchical indoor and outdoor spatial model that can be associated with crowd-sensed trajectory data on the fly. Our modelling approach defines generic and flexible semantic trajectories considering multiple collaborative data semantics at different granularities and where trajectory segmentation relies on evolving semantic values. This thesis develops a modelling framework for complex events applied to our indoor and outdoor semantic trajectory model based on a formallanguage that establishes the required operations for the composition of the events. We have implemented data pipelines to examine our approach’s efficiency. To improve the accuracy of CA models, various driving factors like spatial proximity and neighbourhood effects have been explored in previous studies, but the inclusion of these factors does not address the directional differences in urban expansion. To address this issue, this study develops a method to measure urban spatial anisotropy (SA) with respect to 18 variables at both the global and local scales, and integrates all these SA variables into a logistic regression-based CA model. The revised CA model is evaluated with a case study for Huizhou, China. The case study shows that the simulation results for the CA model with SA exhibit 89% overall accuracy; compared to CA models that do not consider SA, the revised CA model can improve precision by 5% on newly developed cells. The consideration of SA in CA models proves promising in improving the accuracy of urban expansion simulations.
