[Termes IGN] théorie de la connaissanceRésumé : (Auteur) Recent advances in information technology have enabled scientists to generate unprecedented amounts of earth-related data, with tremendous potential for dealing with pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. Yet the volume and heterogeneity of available data clearly overwhelm traditional analytical approaches, as well as the human capacity to derive patterns and useful insights. This book examines how geospatial knowledge can be analyzed and represented in a manner that not only is accurate and coherent, but also makes intuitive sense to the end user. Concepts from a range of disciplines are integrated to explore the processes by which people acquire, represent, and utilize spatiotemporal knowledge. Arguing that the human user and the computer must be viewed as interrelated components of a single system, the book provides principles and recommendations for improving the design of geographic information systems (GIS) and other geospatial modeling tools. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper develops a method for analysing changes in a surface, a scalar function defined over a two-dimensional region. The method is based on the topological method for a static surface that uses critical points (peaks, bottoms, and cols) and their connecting lines. To extend the topological method to spatio-temporal domain, four types of primitive events are proposed : 1) generation, 2) disappearance, 3) movement, and 4) switch. The change of a surface is described by a combination of these primitives. From sufaces of two times a set of primitive events that cause the change is deduced. They are stored in GIS as spatial objects with attributes, and their spatio-temporal pattern is visually analysed. To test the validity of the method, the change of retail cluster in Shinjuku and Shibuya area in Tokyo is analysed. The empiracal study yielded some interesting finding that help us changes in the spatial structure of retailing. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (auteur) A crucial requirement for the effective exploitation of geographic information is users' access to the knowledge held in corresponding stored resources, i.e. their understanding of what can be derived from available geographic databases and software. At the core of it is the problem of how to share and reuse knowledge, a major current challenge of Artificial Intelligence (Al). The work presented here extends upon lessons learnt in Al. The proposed solution to the users’ access issue is an expert system that stores geographical knowledge derivation recipes, and that allows users to browse and customise these recipes. Specifically, we build a model representing the recipes components, i.e. geographic application patterns. This model structures metadata about geographic data and metadata about stored processes, and it describes the usage of these data and processes. A prototype of this system, coded in Java, is presented in this paper.
