[Termes IGN] similitude sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The exponential growth of natural language text data in social media has contributed a rich data source for geographic information. However, incorporating such data source for GIS analysis faces tremendous challenges as existing GIS data tend to be geometry based while natural language text data tend to rely on natural language spatial relation (NLSR) terms. To alleviate this problem, one critical step is to translate geometric configurations into NLSR terms, but existing methods to date (e.g. mean value or decision tree algorithm) are insufficient to obtain a precise translation. This study addresses this issue by adopting the random forest (RF) algorithm to automatically learn a robust mapping model from a large number of samples and to evaluate the importance of each variable for each NLSR term. Because the semantic similarity of the collected terms reduces the classification accuracy, different grouping schemes of NLSR terms are used, with their influences on classification results being evaluated. The experiment results demonstrate that the learned model can accurately transform geometric configurations into NLSR terms, and that recognizing different groups of terms require different sets of variables. More importantly, the results of variable importance evaluation indicate that the importance of topology types determined by the 9-intersection model is weaker than metric variables in defining NLSR terms, which contrasts to the assertion of ‘topology matters, metric refines’ in existing studies. [Termes IGN] relation topologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The concept of spacetime has long been used in physics to refer to models that integrate 3D space and time as a single 4D continuum. We argue in this paper, that it is also advantageous to use this concept in a practical geographic context by realizing a true 4D model, where time is modeled and implemented as a dimension in the same manner as the three spatial dimensions. Within this paper, we focus on 4D vector objects, which can be implemented using dimension-independent data structures such as generalized maps. A 4D vector model allows us to create and manipulate models with actual 4D objects and the topological relationships connecting them, all of which have a geometric interpretation and can be constructed, modified, and queried. In this paper, we discuss where such a 4D model fits with respect to other spatiotemporal modeling approaches, and we show concretely how higher-dimensional modeling can be used to represent such 4D objects and topological relationships. In addition, we explain how the 4D objects in such a system can be created and manipulated using a small set of implementable operations, which use simple 3D space and 1D time inputs for intuitiveness and which modify the underlying 4D model indirectly. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) We present a data-driven technique to visualize forest landscapes and simulate their future development according to alternative management scenarios. Gentle harvesting intensities were preferred for maintaining scenic values in a test of eliciting public’s preferences based on the simulated landscapes.
Context : Visualizations of future forest landscapes according to alternative management scenarios are useful for eliciting stakeholders’ preferences on the alternatives. However, conventional computer visualizations require laborious tree-wise measurements or simulators to generate these observations.
Aims : We describe and evaluate an alternative approach, in which the visualization is based on reconstructing forest canopy from sparse density, leaf-off airborne laser scanning data.
Methods : Computational geometry was employed to generate filtrations, i.e., ordered sets of simplices belonging to the three-dimensional triangulations of the point data. An appropriate degree of filtering was determined by analyzing the topological persistence of the filtrations. The topology was further utilized to simulate changes to canopy biomass, resembling harvests with varying retention levels. Relative priorities of recreational and scenic values of the harvests were estimated based on pairwise comparisons and analytic hierarchy process (AHP).
Results : The canopy elements were co-located with the tree stems measured in the field, and the visualizations derived from the entire landscape showed reasonably realistic, despite a low numerical correspondence with plot-level forest attributes. The potential and limitations to improve the proposed parameterization are discussed.
Conclusion : Although the criteria to evaluate the landscape visualization and simulation models were not conclusive, the results suggest that forest scenes may be feasibly reconstructed based on data already covering broad areas and readily available for practical applications.

[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Compared to raster grid, Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN), and point cloud, the benefit of voxel representation lies in that the implicit notion of adjacency and the true 3D representation can be presented simultaneously. A binary voxel-based data (BVD) model is proposed to reconstruct aerial lidar point cloud and based on the constructed model 3D ground filtering (V3GF) is developed for separating ground points from unground ones. The proposed V3GF algorithm selects the lowest voxels with a value of 1 as ground seeds and then labels them and their 3D connected set as ground voxels. The ISPRS benchmark dataset are used to compare the performance of V3GF with those of eight other publicized filtering methods. Results indicate that the V3GF improves on Axelsson's performance on five samples in terms of total error. The average Kappa coefficients for sites with relatively flat urban areas, rough slope and discontinuous surfaces are 92.49 percent, 72.23 percent and 61.27 percent, respectively. [Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The automatic interpretation of 3D point clouds for building reconstruction is a challenging task. The interpretation process requires highly structured models representing semantics. Formal grammars can describe structures as well as the parameters of buildings and their parts. We propose a novel approach for the automatic learning of weighted attributed context-free grammar rules for 3D building reconstruction, supporting the laborious manual design of rules. We separate structure from parameter learning. Specific Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used to generate a weighted context-free grammar and predict structured outputs such as parse trees. The grammar is extended by parameters and constraints, which are learned based on a statistical relational learning method using Markov Logic Networks (MLNs). MLNs enforce the topological and geometric constraints. MLNs address uncertainty explicitly and provide probabilistic inference. They are able to deal with partial observations caused by occlusions. Uncertain projective geometry is used to deal with the uncertainty of the observations. Learning is based on a large building database covering different building styles and façade structures. In particular, a treebank that has been derived from the database is employed for structure learning.
