[Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (auteur) There has been an increasing interest in mapping and monitoring urban land use/land cover using remote sensing techniques. However, there still exist quite a number of challenges in deriving urban extent and its expansion density from remote sensing data quantitatively. This study utilized Landsat TM/ETM+ remote sensing data to assess urban expansion and its thermal characteristics with a case study in the city of Changsha, China. We proposed a new approach for quantitatively determining built-up area, its expansion density and their respective relationship with land surface temperature (LST) patterns. An urban expansion metric was also developed using a moving window mechanism to identify urban built-up area and its expansion density based on selected threshold values. The study suggested that urban extent and its expansion density, as well as surface thermal characteristics and patterns could be identified through quantitatively derived remotely sensed indices and LST, which offer meaningful characteristics in quantifying urban expansion density and urban thermal pattern. Results from the case study demonstrated that: (1) the built-up area and urban expansion density have significantly increased in the city of Changsha from 1990 to 2001; and (2) the differences of urban expansion densities correspond to thermal effects, where a high percentage of imperviousness is usually associated with the area covered by high surface temperature. As one of the most rapidly urbanized cities in Canada, Saskatoon (SK) was selected as our study area. Surface brightness retrieving, Pearson correlation, linear regression modeling, and buffer analysis were applied to different satellite datasets. The results indicate that both Landsat and MODIS data can yield pronounced estimations of daily air temperature with a significantly adjusted R2 of 0.803 and 0.518 at the spatial scales of 120m and 1000 m, respectively. MODIS monthly LST data is highly suitable for monitoring the trend of monthly urban air temperature throughout summer (June, July, and August) due to a high average R2 of 0.8 (P Numéro de notice : A2015-436 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.1515/geo-2015-0005 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1515/geo-2015-0005 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=77036

This paper presents a simulation study to investigate whether spaceborne submillimeter radiometric observations, which can be realized with fairly high spatial resolution, are able to derive the vertical structure of the atmospheric wet delay. The accuracy of the retrieved zenith wet delay (ZWD) trend as a function of surface height is assessed in order to correct the associated height dependence of the interferometric phase error in a SAR interferogram. Using a simulated benchmark, we evaluate the errors associated with the use of both a linear and an exponential model of the behavior of ZWD as a function of the surface height. This paper shows a fairly accurate reconstruction of the trend parameters estimated from radiometer brightness temperature images, with respect to realistic atmospheric profiles provided by radiosounding observations (RAOBs). The trend parameters that we consider in this paper are the slope K for the linear model and scale height H for the exponential one. An overall better accuracy is found for the exponential model, which is more representative of the actual behavior of ZWD with height, resulting in a residual uncertainty in the path delay due to the atmospheric stratification of approximately 0.2-0.3 cm and nearly zero bias, as compared to RAOBs. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) Measurements of both the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Aquarius L-band microwave radiometers show a significant presence of radio frequency interference (RFI), although they operate in a protected frequency band where transmission is prohibited. RFI detection and mitigation remain a challenging problem for both missions, especially for low or moderate (i.e., on the order of 10 K or less) amplitude contributions. An algorithm for low-level source detection and mitigation is already included in Aquarius data sets, and both Aquarius and SMOS have distinct attributes that can potentially enable further improvements in detection and mitigation of these sources to some degree. The combination of SMOS and Aquarius data sets may enable further future improvements as well. Initial efforts toward this goal are reported in this paper. Similarities and differences in RFI effects on SMOS and Aquarius are examined, with a particular focus on instrument properties that cause differences in received RFI power in SMOS and Aquarius observations of a specific source. A study is also performed of SMOS observations for regions reported by Aquarius to contain “low-level” RFI. It is shown that the detection of these sources in the SMOS data set is challenging and that the dependence of the SMOS third and fourth Stokes parameters on incidence angle makes the polarimetric features of SMOS difficult to utilize for low-level source detection. However, an angular fitting procedure suggested previously in the literature can, in some cases, detect such sources in horizontal and vertical polarizations.
