[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Terrain undulations affect the geometric and radiometric quality of synthetic aperture radar images. The correction of these effects becomes indispensable when quantitative image analysis is performed with respect to the derivation of geo- and biophysical parameters. The paper presents a rigorous approach for geometric and radiometric correction of SAR images. Using a digital elevation model, the imaging geometry is reconstructed and is used to perform geometric and radiometric correction of terrain induced distortions. The importance of a stringent radiometric correction based on the integration of the image brightness is emphasized. The approach guarantees that the energy contained in the image data is preserved throughout the geocoding process. The resulting backscattering images are fully terrain corrected and can be used for further quantitative investigations and may also improve qualitative studies as e.g. land cover classifications. The technique is applicable for different sensor types and image products, including already geocoded SAR images. The effect of different resolutions of digital elevation models used for the correction of the backscattering coefficient is investigated. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) This work addressed the retrieval of Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) from combined mid-infrared and thermal infrared data of Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infra-Red Imager (SEVIRI) onboard the geostationary satelliteMeteosat Second Generation (MSG). To correct for the atmospheric effects in satellite measurements, a new atmospheric correction scheme was developed for both Middle Infra-Red (MIR) and Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) channels. For the MIR channel, because it is less sensitive to the change of water vapor content, the clear-sky and time-nearest European Centre for Median-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) atmospheric data were used for the images where no atmospheric data are available. For TIR channels, a modified model of Diurnal Temperature Cycle (DTC) used by Göttsche and Olesen and Schädlich et al. was adopted. The separation of Land Surface Temperature (LST) and LSE is based on the concept of the Temperature Independent Spectral Indices (TISI) constructed with one channel in MIR and one channel in TIR. The results of two different combinations (combination of channels 4 and 9 and of channels 4 and 10) and two successive days at six specific locations over North Africa show that the retrievals are consistent. The range of emissivity in MSG-SEVIRI channel 4 goes from 0.5 for bare areas to 0.96 for densely vegetated areas, whereas the emissivities in MSG-SEVIRI channels 9 and 10 are usually from 0.9 to 0.95 for bare areas and from 0.95 to 1.0 for vegetated areas. For densely vegetated areas, the emissivities in MSG-SEVIRI channel 9 are larger than the ones in channel 10, whereas the opposite is observed over bare areas. The RMS differences between two combinations over the whole studied region are 0.017 for emissivity in channel 4, 0.008 for emissivity in channel 9 and 0.007 for emissivity in channel 10. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Estimation of aerosol loadings is of great importance to the studies on global climate changes. The current Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol estimation algorithm over land is based on the “dark-object” approach, which works only over densely vegetated (“dark”) surfaces. In this study, we develop a new aerosol estimation algorithm that uses the temporal signatures from a sequence of MODIS imagery over land surfaces, particularly “bright” surfaces. The estimated aerosol optical depth is validated by Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) measurements. Case studies indicate that this algorithm can retrieve aerosol optical depths reasonably well from the winter MODIS imagery at seven sites: four sites in the greater Washington, DC area, USA; Beijing City, China; Banizoumbou, Niger, Africa; and Bratts Lake, Canada. The MODIS aerosol estimation algorithm over land (MOD04), however, does not perform well over these non-vegetated surfaces. This new algorithm has the potential to be used for other satellite images that have similar temporal resolutions. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) The Multi-frequency Scanning Microwave Radiometer (MSMR) aboard the Indian Space Research Organization—Oceansat-1 platform measured land surface brightness temperature at a C-band frequency and provided an opportunity for exploring large-scale soil moisture retrieval during its two-year period of operation. These data may provide a valuable extension to the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) since they covered a portion of the time period between the two missions. This investigation was one of the first to utilize the MSMR data for a land application and, as a result, several data quality issues had to be addressed. These included geolocation accuracy, calibration (particularly over land), erroneous data, and the significance of anthropogenic radio-frequency interference (RFI). Calibration of the low frequency channels was evaluated using inter-comparisons between the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) and the MSMR brightness temperatures. Biases (TMI TB>MSMR TB) of 3.4 and 3.6 K were observed over land for the MSMR 10.65 GHz horizontal and vertical polarization channels, respectively. These results suggested that additional calibration of the MSMR data was required. Comparisons between the MSMR measured brightness temperature and ground measured volumetric soil moisture collected during the South Great Plain experiment (SGP99) indicated that the lower frequency and horizontal polarization observations had higher sensitivity to soil moisture. Using a previously developed soil emission model, multi-temporal regional soil moisture distributions were retrieved for the continental United States. Comparisons between the MSMR based soil moisture and ground measured volumetric soil moisture indicated a standard error of estimate of 0.052 m3/m3.
