[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Multisensor image registration is needed in a large number of applications of remote sensing imagery. The accuracy achieved with usual methods (manual control points extraction, estimation of an analytical deformation model) is not satisfactory for many applications where a subpixel accuracy for each pixel of the image is needed (change detection or image fusion, for instance). Unfortunately, there are few works in the literature about the fine registration of multisensor images and even less about the extension of approaches similar to those based on fine correlation for the case of monomodal imagery. In this paper, we analyze the problem of the automatic multisensor image registration and we introduce similarity measures which can replace the correlation coefficient in a deformation map estimation scheme. We show an example where the deformation map between a radar image and an optical one is fully automatically estimated. [Termes IGN] stabilité dans le tempsRésumé : (Auteur) Evaluation of air- or space-bome remote sensors measuring soil moisture requires strategic ground-based sampling. As part of the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02), daily surface soil moisture sampling at 90-140 locations were conducted in four fields in Walnut Creek watershed, Iowa. Various combinations of soils, vegetation, and topography characterize the fields. Depending on the field's characteristics and soil moisture content, 3 - 32 independent measurements were necessary to capture the field mean volumetric soil moisture with a + 2% bias and 95% confidence interval. Validation of the retrieved soil moisture products from the aircraft microwave instruments using the average of 14 samples per field is more appropriate for dry (25% volumetric soil moisture) range than for intermediate soil moisture range. Time stability analysis showed that an appropriately selected single sampling point could provide similar accuracy across a range of soil moisture conditions. Analyses based on landscape position (depression, hilltop, steep slope, and mild slope) showed that locations with mild slopes consistently exhibit time stable features. Hilltop and steep slope locations consistently underestimated mean field soil moisture. Soils parameters could not be used to identify time stable features as sampling locations with relatively high sand content consistently underestimated the field mean while those locations with relatively high clay content consistently overestimated the field mean. However, the slope position characterization of time stable features was enhanced using soils properties. The mild slope locations having the best time-stable features are those with moderate to moderately high clay content as compare to the field average (28-30% clay). [Termes IGN] Soil Moisture ExperimentRésumé : (Auteur) Watershed scale soil moisture estimates are necessary to validate current remote sensing products, such as those from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR). Unfortunately, remote sensing technology does not currently resolve the land surface at a scale that is easily observed with ground measurements. One approach to validation is to use existing soil moisture measurement networks and scale these point observations up to the resolution of remote sensing footprints. As part of the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02), one such soil moisture gaging system in the Walnut Creek Watershed, Iowa, provided robust estimates of the soil moisture average for a watershed throughout the summer of 2002. Twelve in situ soil moisture probes were installed across the watershed. These probes recorded soil moisture at a depth of 5 cm from June 29, 2002 to August 19, 2002. The sampling sites were analyzed for temporal and spatial stability by several measures including mean relative difference, Spearman rank, and correlation coefficient analysis. Representative point measurements were used to estimate the watershed scale (3 25 km) soil moisture average and shown to be accurate indicators with low variance and bias of the watershed scale soil moisture distribution. This work establishes the validity of this approach to provide watershed scale soil moisture estimates in this study region for the purposes of satellite validation with estimation errors as small as 3%. Also, the potential sources of error in this type of analysis are explored. This study is a first step in the implementation of large-scale soil moisture validation using existing networks such as the Soil Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) and several Agricultural Research Service watersheds as a basis for calibrating satellite soil moisture products, for networks design, and designing field experiments. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (Auteur) Although satellite remote sensing techniques have been widely implemented for a variety of applications, using either single or time-series images, few studies have explicitly considered atmospheric effects, and how they can most effectively be minimized. Despite the considerable number of available atmospheric correction algorithms, there is little literature concerning their relative merits. Over water bodies, atmospheric effects account for the majority of the at-satellite measured radiance in the visible bands, and therefore targets of this type provide an opportunity for assessing the effectiveness of the different methods available. This paper reports a study of atmospheric effects and their correction, using multi-spectral satellite remote sensing data for an area to the west of London that includes eight large water reservoirs and a major international airport (Heathrow). Through comparisons of reflectance within a time series of 12 Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) images, the overall impact of atmospheric contributions is shown. The available atmospheric correction literature is then reviewed, and the methods applied to the satellite imagery of the reservoirs. The results are compared with reflectances acquired using a field spectro-radiometer. A critical appraisal of the results, and of problems encountered in applying the various methods, leads to an evaluation of their value in practice. [Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (Auteur) Angular signatures of the innermost few degrees of the hotspot are retrieved on Australian land surfaces with an angular resolution better than 0.5° and a spatial resolution of around 150 km, using data from the Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances (POLDER) instrument on the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS). These constitute the first comprehensive hotspot measurements at the scale of a continent. The retrieval technique requires that the hotspot characteristics at small angular scales are approximately invariant over a region of about 50km in extent, but accommodates pixel-to-pixel variations in the other characteristics, of the angular signature. Continental maps of the amplitude and half-width of the hotspot, in two spectral bands, are presented for two 41-day orbit cycles in different seasons and compared with a vegetation map. The half-widths are predominantly in the range 0.5°-1.5°, with no systematic difference between the 670 nm and 865 nm bands, and show little spatial structure. The maps of hotspot amplitude display significant spatial structure that corresponds closely to the vegetation map. Generally, areas of trees and tall shrubs are characterized by low hotspot amplitudes, while cropland, grassland and areas of low shrubs have high hotspot amplitudes. The evergreen broadleaf eucalypt forests are notable in that the amplitude is low at 670 nm and high at 865 nm.
