This combination aims to produce a global and consistent solution for Earth orientation parameters (EOPs), polar motion xp and yp, and universal time UT1 with a 1-day or a 6-hour sampling, as well as weekly station positions. In this paper we present a methodology for multitechnique combination at the observational level. We process the measurements of the four techniques over a 1-year period (the year 2002) in order to illustrate and validate our method. All techniques are processed with the same computational framework, thus with the same models and a priori values for parameters. By using the same software and conventions, we avoid inconsistencies in individual computations. We process each technique individually and inside the combination. The comparison between these solutions is a way of analyzing the power of our method even if the actual status of our software does not reproduce the state-of-the-art analyses of each technique. However, we produce an analysis of the quality of our individual computations so that readers can get an informed appreciation of the current capabilities of our software. Finally, we present the capability of such combinations in terms of accuracy and precision, we underline the main issues of our method and propose solutions to solve them in the future. Various measures have been developed to describe and compare the accuracy of maps and the performance of different classifiers, but the extent to which these measures are consistent with each other is largely unknown. In this paper the consistency of fourteen category-level and twenty map-level accuracy measures was tested on 595 published error matrices using nonparametric correlation coefficients (Spearman's rho and Kendall's tau-b) as well as the probability of concordance. The results show that four groups can be identified for the category-level measures and three groups for map-level measures. The consistency among the measures within a group is generally higher than that among the measures from different groups though all the measures at the same level are highly consistent with each other. We recommend that user's accuracy and producer's accuracy and the overall accuracy should be provided as primary accuracy measures and the two relative entropy change measures and the mutual information normalized by the arithmetic mean of the entropies on map and ground truthing be provided as supplementary measures. The chance-corrected, error matrix-normalized and user's and producer's accuracy-combined measures were found to contain estimation and interpretation problems at both category- and map-levels and are therefore not recommended for general use. [Termes IGN] image Landsat-TMRésumé : (Auteur) Four atmospheric correction methods, two relative and two absolute, were compared in this study. Two of the methods (PIF and RCS) were relative approaches; COST is an absolute image-based method and 6S, an absolute modeling method. The methods were applied to the hazy bands 1 through 4 of a Landsat TM scene of the year 1997, which was being used in a change detection project. The effects of corrections were studied in woodland patches. Three criteria, namely (a) image attributes; (b) image classification results, and (c) landscape metrics, were used for comparing the performance of the correction methods. Average pixel values, dynamic range, and coefficient of variation of bands constituted the first criterion, the area of detected vegetation through image classification was the second criterion, and patch and landscape measures of vegetation the third criterion. Overall, the COST, RCS, and 6S methods performed better than PIF and showed more stable results. The 6S method produced some negative values in bands 2 through 4 due to the unavailability of some data needed in the model. Having to use only a single set of image pixels for normalization in the PIF method and the difficulty of selecting such samples in the study area may be the reasons for its poor performance. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Long-range airborne laser altimetry and laser scanning (LIDAR) or airborne gravity surveys in, for example, polar or oceanic areas require airborne kinematic GPS baselines of many hundreds of kilometers in length. In such instances, with the complications of ionospheric biases, it can be a real challenge for traditional differential kinematic GPS software to obtain reasonable solutions. In this paper, we will describe attempts to validate an implementation of the precise point positioning (PPP) technique on an aircraft without the use of a local GPS reference station. We will compare PPP solutions with other conventional GPS solutions, as well as with independent data by comparison of airborne laser data with “ground truth” heights. The comparisons involve two flights: A July 5, 2003, airborne laser flight line across the North Atlantic from Iceland to Scotland, and a May 24, 2004, flight in an area of the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland, near-coincident in time and space with the ICESat satellite laser altimeter. Both of these flights were more than 800 km long. Comparisons between different GPS methods and four different software packages do not suggest a clear preference for any one, with the heights generally showing decimeter-level agreement. For the comparison with the independent ICESat- and LIDAR-derived “ground truth” of ocean or sea-ice heights, the statistics of comparison show a typical fit of around 10 cm RMS in the North Atlantic, and 30 cm in the sea-ice region north of Greenland. Part of the latter 30 cm error is likely due to errors in the airborne LIDAR measurement and calibration, as well as errors in the “ground truth” ocean surfaces due to drifting sea-ice. Nevertheless, the potential of the PPP method for generating 10 cm level kinematic height positioning over long baselines is illustrated. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing was applied to agricultural land in the Miura Peninsula, near the metropolis of Tokyo in Japan. The study area is characterized by complicated land use patches, which is the general characteristic of most agricultural lands in Japan. Several feature extraction/classification methods were examined in classifying the land use and plant species. The results showed that decision boundary feature extraction (DBFE) was better than principal component analysis (PCA) as the feature extraction method. Moreover, the pre-classification process using NDVI that separates the whole study area into vegetated area and non-vegetated areas also improved the classification accuracy. After the pre-procedures, the land use and plant species were finally mapped by maximum likelihood classification (MLC) or extraction and classification of homogeneous objects (ECHO). The best kappa (overall accuracy) of classification was 0.914 (92.4%) and 0.924 (93.3%) for MLC and ECHO, respectively. The best accuracies of each category for the image were 79.5% to 100% for plant species (watermelon, pumpkin, marigold, grass and tree), 88.7% to 100% for soil types, 97.8% for concrete, and 99.4% for vinyl-mulches. Although, built-up area has low estimation accuracy, this did not affect the overall classification accuracy because it covers only a very small area.
