[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) One of the most critical processes for the long-term management of groundwater resources is Groundwater Potential Zonation (GWPZ). Despite their importance, traditional groundwater studies are costly, difficult, complex, and time-consuming. This study aims to investigate GWPZ mapping for the Al-Qalamoun region, in the Western part of Syria. We combined the Multi-Influence Factor (MIF) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to estimate the GWPZ. The weight and score factors of eight factors were used to develop the GWPZ including drainage density, lithology, slope, lineament density, geomorphology, land use/land cover, rainfall, and soil. According to the findings, about 46% and 50.6% of the total area of the Al-Qalamoun region was classified as suitable for groundwater recharge by the AHP and MIF methods, respectively. However, 54% and 49.4% of the area was classified as having poor suitability for groundwater recharge by the AHP and MIF methods, respectively. These areas with poor suitability can be utilized for gathering surface water. The validation of the results showed that the AHP and MIF methods have similar accuracy for the GWPZ; however, the accuracy and results depend on influencing factors and their weights assigned by experts. [Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (Auteur) Using satellite-based maps, Ceccherini et al. (Nature 583:72-77, 2020) report abruptly increasing harvested area estimates in several EU countries beginning in 2015. Using more than 120,000 National Forest Inventory observations to analyze the satellite-based map, we show that it is not harvested area but the map’s ability to detect harvested areas that abruptly increases after 2015 in Finland and Sweden. [Termes IGN] ToulouseRésumé : (Auteur) The HYEP project (ANR HYEP 14-CE22-0016-01 Hyperspectral imagery for Environmental urban Planning - Mobility and Urban Systems Programme - 2014) confirmed the interest of a global approach to the urban environment by remote sensing and in particular by using hyperspectral imaging (HI). The interest of hyperspectral images lies in the range of information provided over wavelengths from 0.4 to 4 μm; they thus provide access to spectral quantities of interest and to chemical or biophysical parameters of the surface. HYEP's objective was to specify this and to propose a panel of methods and treatments taking into account the characteristics of other existing sensors in order to compare their performance. The developments carried out were applied and evaluated on hyperspectral airborne images acquired in Toulouse and Kaunas (Lithuania), also used to synthesize space systems: Sentinel-2, Hypxim/Biodiversity and Pleiades. Among the locks identified were those related to improving the spatial capabilities of the sensors and spatial scale changes, which were partially overcome by fusion and sharpening approaches, which proved to be successful. After a description of our hyperspectral data set acquired over Toulouse, an analysis is conducted on several existing and accessible spectral databases. Then, the chosen methods are presented. They include extraction, fusion and classification methods, which are then applied on our dataset synthetized at different spatial resolution to evaluate the benefits and the complementarity of hyperspectral imagery in comparison with other traditional sensors. Some specific applications are investigated of interest for urban planners: impervious soil map, vegetation species cartography and detection of solar panels. Finally, discussion and perspectives are presented. [Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (auteur) The timely and accurate monitoring of forest resources is becoming of increasing importance in light of the multi-functionality of these ecosystems and their increasing vulnerability to climate change. Remote sensing observations of tree cover and systematic ground observations from National Forest Inventories (NFIs) represent the two major sources of information to assess forest area and use. The specificity of two methods is calling for an in-depth analysis of their strengths and weaknesses and for the design of novel methods emerging from the integration of satellite and surface data. On this specific debate, a recent paper by Breidenbach et al. published in this journal suggests that the detection of a recent increase in EU forest harvest rate—as reported in Nature by Ceccherini et al.—is largely due to technical limitations of satellite-based mapping. The article centers on the difficulty of the approaches to estimate wood harvest based on remote sensing. However, it does not discuss issues with the robustness of validation approaches solely based on NFIs. Here we discuss the use of plot data as a validation set for remote sensing products, discussing potentials and limitations of both NFIs and remote sensing, and how they can be used synergistically. Finally, we highlight the need to collect in situ data that is both relevant and compatible with remote sensing products within the European Union. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) This study was undertaken to be a remedy to urban water scarcity phenomena having escalated consequences with the contemporaneous effects of climate change and over-urbanization. Hence, a broad list of mitigation strategies comprising 44 action plans under seven dimensions was assessed depending upon five constraints (i.e., cost-effectiveness, time/effort required, feasibility, primary benefit, and secondary benefits). To realize the overarching aim of this research, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) each subjected to the fuzzy set theory were employed. In this regard, the fuzzy AHP was utilized for determining the weights of constraining criteria, while the prioritization of the strategies was performed via the fuzzy TOPSIS. The results revealed that the primary benefit is the most prevailing criterion compared to its counterparts. In addition, procuring organized land use planning and limiting new growth in urban areas was found as the most promising strategy to combat urban water scarcity phenomena. The findings further highlighted the effectiveness of conducting integrated water resource planning against climate change and fostering the use of sustainable materials domestically in not only mitigating urban water scarcity but also increasing the resiliency and sustainability of the urbanized cities.
