[Termes IGN] sous ensemble flouRésumé : (Auteur) To support diversified uses of geographical information there is a need for enhanced spatial data infrastructures to create interoperability between users and producers of geographic data. One important interoperability problem is caused by differences in data semantics, for example heterogeneous land use/land cover classification systems. A critical review of an existing method for semantic interoperability between land cover classifications is used to motivate and introduce a modified framework based on conceptual spaces and rough fuzzy sets. Land cover categories are defined by a set of defining attributes formally represented as a collection of rough fuzzy membership functions and importance weights. This parameterized representation is used to translate between the US Natural Vegetation Classification Standard and the European CORINE Land Cover system based on evaluations of different aspects of semantic similarity between categories. The results demonstrate that the use of different similarity metrics in a conceptual space, together with the explicit rough fuzzy uncertainty representation, increases the semantic separation between land cover categories. Diagrams and maps illustrate the information that can be gained from the semantic similarity assessment. These developments open new possibilities to explore semantic relationships between concepts, both within a classification and between classifications used in different contexts. [Termes IGN] spatial metricsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses semantic accuracy in relation to images obtained with remote sensing. Semantic accuracy is defined in terms of map complexity. Complexity metrics are applied as a metric to measure complexity. The idea is that a homogeneous map of a low complexity is of a high semantic accuracy. In this study, complexity metrics like aggregation index, fragmentation index and patch size are applied on two images with different objectives, one from an agricultural area in the Netherlands, and one from a rural area in Kazakhstan. Images are segmented first using region merging segmentation. Effects on metrics and semantic accuracy are discussed. On the basis of well-defined subsets, we conclude that the complexity metrics are suitable to quantify the semantic accuracy of the map. Segmentation is the most useful for an agricultural area including various agricultural fields. Metrics are mutually comparable being highly correlated, but showing some different aspects in quantifying map homogeneity and identifying objects of a high semantic accuracy. [Termes IGN] SPIRITRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic information retrieval is a new and evolving domain. The development of GIR systems requires the analysis of requirements for such systems and, after systems are implemented their evaluation. This paper describes requirement analysis and evaluation for the SPIRIT system. Methods of user and system-centred evaluation are described and a methodology for building a document collection to facilitate derivation of measures of system performance, together with a new scheme for the evaluation of spatial and thematic relevance with respect to search results are introduced. The paper stresses the importance of developing approaches to evaluate GIR systems which holistically evaluate user interactions as well as measures of system performance. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study focuses on the possibilities and the limits of a prospective GIS land cover modelling applied to two case studies (France and Spain). The methodology, based on available GIS tools, consists of using earlier land cover maps and relevant environmental factors (calibration data) to model actual, known land cover to validate the model. The model aggregates Markov chain analysis for time prediction and multi-critera evaluation, multi-objective evaluation and cellular automata to perform spatial contiguity of modelled land cover scores. The first results give an accurate, pixel by pixel prediction rate of approximately 75%. An important issue of this study consists of analysing prediction residues to improve the model. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Developing reliable methods for representing and managing information uncertainty remains it persistent and relevant challenge to GIScience. Information uncertainty is an intricate idea, and recent examinations of this concept have generated many perspectives on its representation and visualization, with perspectives emerging from a wide range of disciplines and application contexts. In this paper, we review and assess progress toward visual tools and methods to help analysis manage and understand information uncertainty. Specifically, we report on efforts to conceptualize uncertainty, decision making with uncertainty, frameworks for representing uncertainty, visual representation and user control of displays of information uncertainty, and evaluative efforts to assess the use and usability of visual displays of uncertainty. We conclude by identifying seven key research challenges in visualizing information uncertainty, particularly as it applies to decision making and analysis.
