[Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this paper is to evaluate spatial resolution effects on image classification. Classification maps were generated with a maximum likelihood (ML) classifier applied to three multi-spectral bands and variance texture images. A total of eight urban land use/cover classes were obtained at six spatial resolution levels based on a series of aggregated Colour Infrared Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) subsets in urban and rural fringe areas of the San Diego metropolitan area. The classification results were compared using overall and individual classification accuracies. Classification accuracies were shown to be influenced by image spatial resolution, window size used in texture extraction and differences in spatial structure within and between categories. The more heterogeneous arc the land use/cover units and the more fragmented are the landscapes, the finer the resolution required. Texture was more effective for improving the classification accuracy of land use classes at finer resolution levels. For spectrally homogeneous classes, a small window is preferable. But for spectrally heterogeneous classes, a large window size is required. [Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Visualization techniques have been developed to recreate natural landscapes, but little has been done to investigate their potential for illustrating land cover change using spatio-temporal data. In this work, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and visualization techniques were applied to generate realistic computer visualizations depicting the dynamic nature of forested environments. High resolution digital imagery and aerial photography were classified using object-oriented methods. . The resulting classifications, along with preexisting land cover datasets, were used to drive the correct placement of vegetation in the visualized landscape, providing an accurate representation of reality at various points in time. 3D Nature's Visual Nature Studio was used to construct a variety of realistic images and animations depicting forest cover change in two distinct ecological settings. Visualizations from Yellowstone National Park focused on the dramatic impact of the 1988 fire upon the lodgepole pine forest. For a study area in Kansas, visualization techniques were used to explore the continuous human-land interactions impacting the eastern deciduous. forest and tallgrass prairie ecotone between 1941 and 2002. The resulting products demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of visualizations for representing spatio-temporal patterns such as changing forest cover. These geographic visualizations allow users to communicate findings and explore new hypotheses in a clear, concise and effective manner. [Termes IGN] laisseRésumé : (Auteur) Determination of the ordinary high water line (OHWL) has been and continues to be an important issue for the State of Florida and elsewhere. The OHWL defines the separation of sovereignty lands of the State and private ownership on non-tidal water bodies. We used imagery from multiple sources to determine if (1) the water's edge can be detected around the lake margins and (2) vegetation community shifts can be reliably detected and correlated with OHWL. It was determined that in areas where water is known to be under vegetation canopy or in heavily vegetated marsh there were no distinct indicators of the OHWL on any of the remote sensing images used. This is because overhanging vegetation and emergent macrophytes both obscure the water's edge. We also found that vegetation types varied widely and none appeared to be precise indicators of the OHWL Most of the plant species in the vicinity of the known location of the OHWL were not classified in any one wetland designation and many were found both in wetland and upland areas and, therefore, provided no distinct characteristics that could be consistently identified or mapped in ArcView using remote sensing images. Les résultats de l'interrogation peuvent être rapportés sous forme de tableau, de fichier CSV ou en format de carte pour des agrégats spatiaux définis par l'usager. Ce système tente de trouver une solution à d'importants problèmes sociaux résultant du développement de vastes banques de données numériques de renseignements sur des individus, qui peuvent être analysées à l'aide de SIG - problèmes qui incluent le non-respect de la vie privée et de la confidentialité, le profilage et la distribution non réglementée, à grande échelle, des banques de données sources. Le système reconnaît également le besoin qu'ont les organismes publics de diffuser l'information et celui des individus d'avoir accès à l'information publique. Il est conçu comme un système côté serveur à architecture ouverte. On établit une banque de données comportant six années de fiches de mortalité due à des blessures, compilée à partir de données fournies par le ministère de la Santé publique du Connecticut, afin d'expliquer le processus de formulation que suit l'usager dans son interrogation, et les résultats correspondants. Le système prototype décrit ici fait appel à la technologie afin de répondre aux besoins des organismes publics qui doivent permettre l'accès à l'information publique selon un mode qui garantit l'intégrité des banques de données, respecte la vie privée et la confidentialité, et facilite l'accès à l'information publique. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) A comparison of the performance of three feature extraction methods was made for mapping forest crown closure (CC) and leaf area index (LAI) with EO-1 Hyperion data. The methods are band selection (SB), principal component analysis (PCA) and wavelet transform (WT). Hyperion data were acquired on October 9, 200 1. A total of 38 field measurements of CC and LAI were collected on August 10 - 11, 2001, at Blodgett Forest Research Station, University of California at Berkeley, USA. The analysis method consists of (1) conducting atmospheric correction with High Accuracy Atmospheric Correction for Hyperspectral Data (HATCH) to retrieve surface reflectance, (2) extracting features with the three methods: SB, PCA and WT, (3) establishing multivariate regression prediction models, (4) predicting and mapping pixel-based CC and LAI values, and (5) validating the CC and LAI mapped results with photo-interpreted CC and LAI values. The experimental results indicate that the energy features extracted by the WT method are the most effective for mapping forest CC and LAI (mapped accuracy (MA) for CC = 84.90%, LAI MA= 75.39%), followed by the PCA method (CC MA= 77.42%, LAI MA= 52.36%). The SB method performed the worst (CC MA= 57.77%, LAI MA= 50.87%).
