[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Modelling fire behaviour in forest fires is based on meteorological, topographical, and vegetation data, including species’ type. To accurately parameterise these models, an inventory of the area of analysis with the maximum spatial and temporal resolution is required. This study investigated the use of UAV-based digital aerial photogrammetry (UAV-DAP) point clouds to classify tree and shrub species in Mediterranean forests, and this information is key for the correct generation of wildfire models. In July 2020, two test sites located in the Natural Park of Sierra Calderona (eastern Spain) were analysed, registering 1036 vegetation individuals as reference data, corresponding to 11 shrub and one tree species. Meanwhile, photogrammetric flights were carried out over the test sites, using a UAV DJI Inspire 2 equipped with a Micasense RedEdge multispectral camera. Geometrical, spectral, and neighbour-based features were obtained from the resulting point cloud generated. Using these features, points belonging to tree and shrub species were classified using several machine learning methods, i.e., Decision Trees, Extra Trees, Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, and MultiLayer Perceptron. The best results were obtained using Gradient Boosting, with a mean cross-validation accuracy of 81.7% and 91.5% for test sites 1 and 2, respectively. Once the best classifier was selected, classified points were clustered based on their geometry and tested with evaluation data, and overall accuracies of 81.9% and 96.4% were obtained for test sites 1 and 2, respectively. Results showed that the use of UAV-DAP allows the classification of Mediterranean tree and shrub species. This technique opens a wide range of possibilities, including the identification of species as a first step for further extraction of structure and fuel variables as input for wildfire behaviour models. [Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (auteur) Single-photon airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems provide high-density data from high flight altitudes. We compared single-photon and linear-mode airborne LiDAR for the prediction of species-specific volumes in boreal coniferous-dominated forests. The LiDAR data sets were acquired at different flight altitudes using Leica SPL100 (single-photon, 17 points ⋅ m−2 ), Riegl VQ-1560i (linear-mode, 11 points ⋅ m−2 ), and Leica ALS60 (linear-mode, 0.6 points ⋅ m−2 ) LiDAR systems. Volumes were predicted at the plot-level using Gaussian process regression with predictor variables extracted from the LiDAR data sets and aerial images. Our findings showed that the Leica SPL100 produced a greater mean root-mean-squared error (RMSE) value (41.7 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) than the Leica ALS60 (39.3 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) in the prediction of species-specific volumes. Correspondingly, the Riegl VQ-1560i (mean RMSE = 33.0 m3 ⋅ ha −1 ) outperformed both the Leica ALS60 and the Leica SPL100. We found that the cumulative distributions of the first echo heights >1.3 m were rather similar among the data sets, whereas the last echo distributions showed larger differences. We conclude that the Leica SPL100 data set is suitable for area-based LiDAR inventory by tree species although the prediction errors are greater than with data obtained using the modern linear-mode LiDAR, such as Riegl VQ-1560i.

[Termes IGN] quasi-géoïdeRésumé : (auteur) Since 2006, several different groups have computed geoid and/or quasigeoid (quasi/geoid) models for the Auvergne test area in central France using various approaches. In this contribution, we compute and compare quasigeoid models for Auvergne using Curtin University of Technology’s and the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology’s approaches. These approaches differ in many ways, such as their treatment of the input data, choice of type of spherical harmonic model (combined or satellite-only), form and sequence of correction terms applied, and different modified Stokes’s kernels (deterministic or stochastic). We have also compared our results with most of the previously reported studies over Auvergne in order to seek any improvements with respect to time [exceptions are when different subsets of data have been used]. All studies considered here compare the computed quasigeoid models with the same 75 GPS-levelling heights over Auvergne. The standard deviation for almost all of the computations (without any fitting) is of the order of 30–40 mm, so there is not yet any clear indication whether any approach is necessarily better than any other nor improving over time. We also recommend more standardisation on the presentation of quasi/geoid comparisons with GPS-levelling data so that results from different approaches over the same areas can be compared more objectively.
