[Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) High-temperature anomalies (HTAs) of the earth's surface, such as fires, volcanic activities, and industrial heat sources, have a profound impact on Earth's system. Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) provides spatially-specific information for precisely measuring the location and extent of HTAs at a fine scale. However, detecting HTAs from MSI images remains challenging because the emitted radiance of an HTA in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands can be easily mixed with the reflected solar radiance background in the daytime; and an increasing number of atypical cases in MSI images need to be treated with the enhanced spatial resolution. A generic HTA detection approach that handles both anthropogenic and natural HTAs will broaden the scope of MSI applications. In this study, (i) we highlight two spectral characteristics of HTAs in the far-SWIR, near-SWIR, and NIR bands (i.e., (ρfar-SWIR - ρnear-SWIR)/ρNIR ≥ 0.45 and (ρfar-SWIR -ρnear-SWIR) ≥ ρnear-SWIR - ρNIR) that can effectively enhance HTAs from background geo-features, based on the reflectance spectra in airborne imaging spectrometer data. (ii) We propose a tri-spectral thermal anomaly index (TAI) that jointly uses the two high-temperature-sensitive SWIR bands and the high-temperature-insensitive NIR band to enhance HTAs, based on the above characteristics and a comprehensive sampling of different types of HTAs from 1,974 MSI images. (iii) We develop a TAI-based approach for MSI images to detect HTAs in general. The proposed approach was applied to detect different types of HTAs, including different biomass burnings, active volcanoes, and industrial HTAs, over a wide range of land-cover scenarios. Validations and comparisons demonstrate the proposed approach is reliable and performs better than the existing state-of-the-art HTA detection approaches. Evaluations on two types of small industrial HTAs, including operating kilns and enclosed landfill gas flares, show that the HTA detection probability of the TAI-based approach from time-series MSI images is ~ 84.91% and 88.23%, respectively. Further investigations show that the TAI-based approach also has good transferability in detecting HTAs from multispectral images acquired by Landsat-family satellites. [Termes IGN] SlovénieRésumé : (auteur) The paper presents a method for mapping fluvial gravel bars based on Sentinel-2 and Landsat imagery. The proposed method therefore uses spectral signal mixture analysis (SSMA) because its results allow the development of land cover fraction maps for surface water, gravel, and vegetation. The method is validated on a spatially heterogeneous mountainous area in the upper Soča river basin in north-west Slovenia, Central Europe. Unmixing results in highly accurate fraction maps with MAE of around 0.1. Gravel fractions are mapped the most accurately, indicating that the approach can be used successfully for fluvial gravel bar mapping. Endmember sets selected automatically perform slightly worse (MAE higher by at most 0.05) than sets selected manually based on high resolution reference data. Both Sentinel-2 and Landsat imagery can be used for accurate mapping with differences between the two remote sensing systems within 0.05 MAE. For the study area, the SSMA-based soft classification method is more accurate for land cover mapping than a Spectral Angle Mapping-based hard classification. The method is promising for an effective use in other cases where highly accurate subpixel information is needed, because it is able to detect small-scale changes that could go unnoticed with hard classification mapping. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Advanced techniques capable of early, rapid, and nondestructive detection of the impacts of drought on fruit tree and the measurement of the underlying photosynthetic traits on a large scale are necessary to meet the challenges of precision farming and full prediction of yield increases. We tested the application of hyperspectral reflectance as a high-throughput phenotyping approach for early identification of water stress and rapid assessment of leaf photosynthetic traits in citrus trees by conducting a greenhouse experiment. To this end, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Cond) and transpiration rate (Trmmol) were measured with gas-exchange approaches alongside measurements of leaf hyperspectral reflectance from citrus grown across a gradient of soil drought levels six times, during 20 days of stress induction and 13 days of rewatering. Water stress caused Pn, Cond, and Trmmol rapid and continuous decline throughout the entire drought period. The upper layer was more sensitive to drought than middle and lower layers. Water stress could also bring continuous and dynamic changes of the mean spectral reflectance and absorptance over time. After trees were rewatered, these differences were not obvious. The original reflectance spectra of the four water stresses were surprisingly of low diversity and could not track drought responses, whereas specific hyperspectral spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) and absorption features or wavelength position variables presented great potential. The following machine-learning algorithms: random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), gradient boost (GDboost), and adaptive boosting (Adaboost) were used to develop a measure of photosynthesis from leaf reflectance spectra. The performance of four machine-learning algorithms were assessed, and RF algorithm yielded the highest predictive power for predicting photosynthetic parameters (R2 was 0.92, 0.89, and 0.88 for Pn, Cond, and Trmmol, respectively). Our results indicated that leaf hyperspectral reflectance is a reliable and stable method for monitoring water stress and yield increase, with great potential to be applied in large-scale orchards. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (auteur) As an important land surface vegetation parameter, fractional vegetation cover (FVC) has been widely used in many Earth system ecological and climate models. In particular, high-quality and reliable FVC products on the global scale are important for the Earth surface process simulation and global change studies. Recently, the FengYun-3 (FY-3) series satellites, which are the second generation of Chinese meteorological satellites, launched with the polar orbit and provide continuous land surface observations on a global scale. However, there is rare studying on the FVC estimation using FY-3 reflectance data. Therefore, the FY-3B reflectance data were selected as the representative data to develop a FVC estimation algorithm in this study, which would investigate the capability of the FY-3 reflectance data on the global FVC estimation. The spatial–temporal validation over the regional area indicated that the FVC estimations generated by the proposed algorithm had reliable continuities. Furthermore, a satisfactory accuracy performance (R2 = 0.7336, RMSE = 0.1288) was achieved for the proposed algorithm based on the Earth Observation LABoratory (EOLAB) reference FVC data, which provided further evidence on the reliability and robustness of the proposed algorithm. All these results indicated that the FY-3 reflectance data were capable of generating a FVC estimation with reliable spatial–temporal continuities and accuracy. [Termes IGN] Zostera noltiiRésumé : (auteur) The dwarf eelgrass Zostera noltei Hornemann (Z. noltei) is the most dominant seagrass in semi-enclosed coastal systems of the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The species is experiencing a worldwide decline and monitoring the extent of its meadows would be a useful approach to estimate the impacts of natural and anthropogenic stressors. Here, we aimed to map the Z. noltei meadows in the Merja Zerga coastal lagoon (Atlantic coast of Morocco) using remote sensing. We used a random forest algorithm combined with field data to classify a SPOT 7 satellite image. Despite the difficulties related to the non-synchronization of the satellite images with the high tide coefficient, our results revealed, with an accuracy of 95%, that dwarf eelgrass beds can be discriminated successfully from other habitats in the lagoon. The estimated area was 160.76 ha when considering mixed beds (Z. noltei-associated macroalgae). The use of SPOT 7 satellite images seems to be satisfactory for long-term monitoring of Z. noltei meadows in the Merja Zerga lagoon and for biomass estimation using an NDVI–biomass quantitative relationship. Nevertheless, using this method of biomass estimation for dwarf eelgrass meadows could be unsuccessful when it comes to areas where the NDVI is saturated due to the stacking of many layers.
