[Termes IGN] réflectance spectraleRésumé : (auteur) Small stands of mangrove trees are difficult to detect and monitor using satellite remote sensing because the width of the narrow strips of vegetation are typically much smaller than the spatial resolution of the imagery. Every mangrove pixel also contains water and bare soil reflectance. Linear spectral unmixing, which estimates the fractional presence of specific land cover types per pixel, was performed on Landsat 8 imagery to detect mangroves on the eastern shoreline of the Bay of La Paz on the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. Low-altitude aerial imagery collected from a DJI Mavic Pro drone was used as ground-reference data in the accuracy assessment. Continuous fractional presence of mangroves was detected with 80% accuracy and 85% of mangrove area was found. Future work will use linear spectral unmixing to systematically monitor mangrove extent and health in the region relative to expected growth in tourism development. [Termes IGN] teneur en carboneRésumé : (auteur) Phytoplankton carbon, an important biogeochemical and ecological parameter, plays a critical role in the carbon cycle and in global warming reduction. Estimation of phytoplankton carbon in inland waters on a large scale using remote sensing is useful for understanding, evaluating, and monitoring the carbon dynamics, and, in particular, for determining the spatial–temporal variation of primary production in inland waters. In a correlation analysis of the phytoplankton carbon concentration and water components, the result revealed no significant correlation between the chlorophyll-a concentration and phytoplankton carbon concentration in inland waters. However, the absorption peak height of particles at 675 nm, which is defined as the absorption at 675 nm subtracted by that at 660 nm, was found to be closely correlated with the phytoplankton carbon concentration. Thus, the absorption peak height of particles at 675 nm could be used as an indicator of the phytoplankton carbon concentration. A semianalytical method based on the remote-sensing reflectance in Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) bands 8, 9, and 17 was developed to derive the absorption peak of particles at a wavelength of 675 nm. Finally, an algorithm for estimating the phytoplankton carbon concentration in inland waters using OLCI bands 8, 9, and 17 was constructed. From 2013 to 2018, eight field campaigns were conducted in inland lakes in different seasons, and the optical properties, optically active water components, and phytoplankton carbon concentrations were obtained. An assessment of its accuracy using an independent data set demonstrated that the algorithm performance is acceptable (mean absolute percentage error, 48.6%, and root mean square error, 0.36 mg/L). As a demonstration, the algorithm was successfully applied to map the phytoplankton carbon concentration in Taihu Lake and Chaohu Lake, China, using OLCI images acquired on December 5, 2017, and August 5, 2018 and December 8, 2... [Termes IGN] réflectance spectraleRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing has potential in studies of the benthic habitat and extracting the reflectance from the data of multispectral sensors, but traditional image classification techniques cannot provide coral habitat maps with adequate accuracy. This study tested five traditional and three ensemble classification techniques on QuickBird for mapping the benthic composition of coral reefs on the Lang Tengah Island (Malaysia). The common techniques, minimum distance, maximum likelihood, K-nearest neighbour, Fisher and parallelepiped techniques were compared with ensemble classifiers, such as majority voting (MV), simple averaging, and mode combination. The per-class accuracy of the habitat detection improved in the ensemble classifiers; in particular, the MV classifier achieved 95%, 65%, 75% and 95% accuracies for coral, sparse coral, coral rubble and sand, respectively. Ensembles increased the accuracy of the habitat mapping classification by 28%, relative to conventional techniques. Thus, the ensemble techniques can be preferred over the traditional for benthic habitat mapping. [Termes IGN] spectroradiomètreRésumé : (auteur) The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Terra spacecraft is completing two decades of successful Earth observations, providing the scientific community with numerous products and supporting applications, such as land surface cover, sea surface temperature, aerosol properties, and vegetation. The 20 reflective solar bands (RSBs) cover a wavelength range from 0.41 to 2.1 μm and are calibrated primarily using a solar diffuser (SD), with lunar measurements and Earth-view (EV) response trends from desert sites used for the response versus scan-angle (RVS) characterization. Prelaunch analysis showed that a few short-wavelength RSBs of Terra MODIS are particularly sensitive to the polarization of the incident light, with on-orbit results further indicating that the polarization sensitivity has experienced changes that are wavelength, mirror side (MS), and scan-angle dependent. Although the primary calibrator, the SD, should provide an unpolarized light, supplemental inputs from the EV response trends used in the RVS characterization are impacted by the Earth scene polarization. The EV trends, uncorrected for polarization, pose a significant challenge in the RVS characterization for the short wavelength bands (3, 8, 9, and 10), therefore impacting the long-term trends and uncertainty characterization. Previous studies from the MODIS Characterization Support Team (MCST) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ocean Biology Processing Group (OBPG) have independently estimated the polarization correction to be applied on the calibrated products to mitigate the impacts to some extent. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Invasive alien plants (IAPs) threaten biodiversity and critical ecosystem services worldwide. There is, therefore, an urgent need to develop intervention measures to control the spread of IAPs. Efforts to control and monitor the spread of IAPs would require their current and detailed distribution over a large geographic area. Recently launched multispectral instrument on-board Sentinel-2 provides free data with good spatiotemporal and spectral resolution, compared to Landsat datasets. The Sentinel-2 dataset, therefore, can be a useful source of the IAPs spatial information required for detection and monitoring purposes. We combined Sentinel-2 data with a radiative transfer model to discriminate IAPs (Acacia mearnsii and Acacia dealbata) from surrounding native tree species in Van Reenen, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The forward mode of combined PROSPECT leaf optical properties model and SAIL canopy bidirectional reflectance model, also referred to as PROSAIL was used to simulate reflectance corresponding to bands of Sentinel-MSI, while the PROSAIL model inversion retrieved leaf area index (LAI) and canopy chlorophyll contents (CCC) of the IAPs and native species. Both reflectance and retrieved properties were used to map the distribution of the species within the study area. Our results showed that A. mearnsii and A. dealbata could be accurately discriminated from the surrounding native trees using integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 based model. We found that CCC– and LAI-based (% accuracy = 92.8%, 91.4% for CCC and LAI, respectively) modelling produced a higher classification accuracy than field sampling-based modelling (Accuracy = 90.2% (IAP), 82.2% (NAT) and kappa coefficient = 0.84 (IAP), 0.78 (NAT)). Simulated bands corresponding to Sentinel-2 data, on the other hand, produced species maps comparable to field sampling-based maps. Overall, the integrated PROSAIL Sentinel-2 inversion approach proved suitable for detecting and mapping IAPs over a large area. Due to the high spatiotemporal coverage of Sentinel-2, satellite images, the model developed showed the potential to contribute to the IAPs monitoring systems.
