[Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (auteur) Today, armed conflict affects some twenty countries, covering an area making up 11% of the surface area of the Earth. Any degradation of nature in these areas represents a harmful depletion of the world’s natural heritage. Despite this, environmental issues are neglected during these periods of conflict, considered secondary to the urgency of restoring peace and safeguarding human life. Yet their consequences are potentially severe. In these areas, it is future generations who will suffer the effects of the current devastation for a very long time. In this context, the method developed in this study, named (Geographic Information System) for Environmental Monitoring in Wartime, can be used to calculate a risk indicator for environmental degradation, spatial monitoring and risk management. This will make it possible to identify the main threats to protected areas, catalogue the damage caused to the environment by armed conflicts and create a dynamic risk map. In this paper, GIS-EMW has been applied to calculate a risk indicator for environmental degradation in Syria. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) In the application of machine learning to geographic object based image analysis, several parameters influence overall classifier performance. One of the first parameters is segmentation size—for example, how many pixels should be grouped together to form an image object. Often, trial and error methods are used to obtain segmentation parameters that best delineate the borders of real world objects. Several attempts at automated methods have produced promising results, but manual intervention is still necessary. Meanwhile, numerous measures of segmentation quality have been defined, but their relationship to classifier performance is not then directly shown. For example, as measures of segmentation quality improve, do classification results improve as well? Our work considers the problem of building classification in high resolution aerial imagery of urban areas. Based on user defined training polygons generated with or without a reference segmentation, we have found several measures of segmentation quality and feature performance that can help users narrow the range of appropriate segmentations. Furthermore, our work finds that given this range, performance of machine learning algorithms remains relatively constant for any given segmentation as long as features used for classification are chosen correctly. We find that the range of scale parameters capable of producing an accurate classification is much broader than typically assumed and trial and error methods for finding this parameter may be an acceptable approach. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) Modelling topological relationships between places and events is challenging especially because these relationships are dynamic, and their evolutionary analysis relies on the explanatory power of representing their interactions across different temporal resolutions. In this paper, we introduce the Space-Time Varying Graph (STVG) based on the whole graph approach that combines directed and bipartite subgraphs with a time-tree for representing the complex interaction between places and events across time. We demonstrate how the proposed STVG can be exploited to identify and extract evolutionary patterns of traffic accidents using graph metrics, ad-hoc graph queries and clustering algorithms. The results reveal evolutionary patterns that uncover the places with high incidence of accidents over different time resolutions, reveal the main reasons why the traffic accidents have occurred, and disclose evolving communities of densely connected traffic accidents over time. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest fires are expected to be more frequent and more intense with climate change, including in temperate and mountain forest ecosystems. In the Alps, forest vulnerability to fire resulting from interactions between climate, fuel types, vegetation structure and tree resistance to fire is little understood. This paper aims at identifying trends in the vulnerability of Alpine forest ecosystems to fire at different scales (tree species, stand level and biogeographic level) and according to three different climatic conditions (cold season, average summer and extremely dry summer). To explore Alpine forest vulnerability to fire, we used surface fuel measurements, forest inventory and fire weather data to simulate fire behaviour and ultimately post-fire tree mortality across 4438 forest plots in the French Alps. The results showed that cold season fires (about 50% of the fires in the French Alps) have a limited impact except on low-elevation forests of the Southern Alps (mainly Oak, Scots pine). In average summer conditions, mixed and broadleaved forests of low elevations suffer the highest mortality rates (up to 75% in coppices). Finally, summer fires occurring in extremely dry conditions promote high mortality across all forest communities. Lowest mortality rates were observed in high forest stands composed of tree species presenting adaptation to surface fires (e.g. thick bark, high canopy) such as Larch forests of the internal Alps. This study provides insights on the vulnerability of the main tree species and forest ecosystems of the French Alps useful for the adaptation of forest management practices to climate changes.
