This includes the determination of coordinates, coordinate differences and baseline lengths by a dynamical analysis of geodetic networks, as well as the analysis and interpretation of the displacement field and its related deformation elements at the earth's surface. All network points are considered as changeable und no more fixed quantities. The investigations are based on a proper division of the displacement field into global, regional, and local parts. The global and regional effects have to be reduced before the local parts can be investigated. Besides the conventional Gauß-Markov-Model a Mixed Model is used as an alternative mathematical basis for the adjustment process. The parameters in the Gauß-Markov-Model are estimated from the method of weighted least squares in the sense of a best linear unbiased estimation (BLUE). In contradiction to this the parameters in the Mixed Model are predicted by using stochastic prior information. We apply a generalized target function and three different prediction methods. The best inhomogeneously linear prediction (inhom-BLIP) possesses the matrix of minimal mean square prediction errors. The best homogeneously linear unbiased prediction (hom-BLUP) is characterized by its robustness against bad or incorrect prior information. With the help of simulated data sets and real observations for the GPS carrier phases the applicability of the phase measurements for analyzing and interpreting the local displacement field and local deformations is demonstrated. All real measurements have been delivered by the Wild-Magnavox WM101 receiver. The superiority of the Mixed Model with respect to the Gauß-Markov-Model is proven by this special application of high precision deformation analysis in satellite geodetic networks based upon GPS carrier phases.
