[Termes IGN] précipitationRésumé : (auteur) Ground-clutter is a significant cause of missed-detection and underestimation of precipitation in complex terrain from space-based radars such as the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). This research proposes an Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework consisting of a precipitation detection model (PDM) and a precipitation regime classification model (PCM) to improve orographic precipitation retrievals from GPM-DPR using machine learning. The PDM is a Random Forest Classifier using GPM Microwave Imager (GMI) calibrated brightness temperatures (Tbs) and low-level precipitation mixing ratios from the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) analysis as inputs. The PCM is a Convolutional Neural Network that predicts the precipitation regime class, defined independently based on quantitative features of ground-based radar reflectivity profiles, using GPM DPR Ku-band (Ku-PR) reflectivity profiles and GMI Tbs. The AI framework is demonstrated for warm-season precipitation in the Southern Appalachian Mountains over.

In order to improve the effectiveness of 3D change detection based on point clouds, an approach for 3D change detection using point-based comparison is presented in this paper. To avoid density variation in point clouds, adaptive thresholds are calculated through the k-neighboring average distance and the local point cloud density. A series of experiments for quantitative evaluation is performed. In the experiments, the influencing factors including threshold, registration error, and neighboring number of 3D change detection are discussed and analyzed. The results of the experiments demonstrate that the approach using adaptive thresholds based on local point cloud density are effective and suitable. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Key message: We modeled 10-year net stand volume growth with four machine learning (ML) methods, i.e., artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machines (SVM), random forests (RF), and nearest neighbor analysis (NN), and with linear regression analysis. Incorporating interactions of multiple variables, the ML methods ANN and SVM predicted nonlinear system behavior and unraveled complex relations with greater accuracy than regression analysis.
Context: Investigating the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of short-term forest dynamics is essential for testing whether the desired goals in forest-ecosystem conservation and restoration are achieved. Inventory data from the Jojadeh section of the Farim Forest located in the uneven-aged, mixed Hyrcanian Forest were used to model and predict 10-year net annual stand volume increment with new machine learning technologies.
Aims: The main objective of this study was to predict net annual stand volume increment as the preeminent factor of forest growth and yield models.
Methods: In the current study, volume increment was modeled from two consecutive inventories in 2003 and 2013 using four machine learning techniques that used physiographic data of the forest as input for model development: (i) artificial neural networks (ANN), (ii) support vector machines (SVM), (iii) random forests (RF), and (iv) nearest neighbor analysis (NN). Results from the various machine learning technologies were compared against results produced with regression analysis.
Results: ANNs and SVMs with a linear kernel function that incorporated field-measurements of terrain slope and aspect as input variables were able to predict plot-level volume increment with a greater accuracy (94%) than regression analysis (87%).
Conclusion: These results provide compelling evidence for the added utility of machine learning technologies for modeling plot-level volume increment in the context of forest dynamics and management.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The uptake of technologies such as airborne laser scanning (ALS) and more recently digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP) enable the characterization of 3-dimensional (3D) forest structure. These forest structural attributes are widely applied in the development of modern enhanced forest inventories. As an alternative to extensive ALS or DAP based forest inventories, regional forest attribute maps can be built from relationships between ALS or DAP and wall-to-wall satellite data products. To date, a number of different approaches exist, with varying code implementations using different programming environments and tailored to specific needs. With the motivation for open, simple and modern software, we present FOSTER (Forest Structure Extrapolation in R), a versatile and computationally efficient framework for modeling and imputation of 3D forest attributes. FOSTER derives spectral trends in remote sensing time series, implements a structurally guided sampling approach to sample these often spatially auto correlated datasets, to then allow a modelling approach (currently k-NN imputation) to extrapolate these 3D forest structure measures. The k-NN imputation approach that FOSTER implements has a number of benefits over conventional regression based approaches including lower bias and reduced over fitting. This paper provides an overview of the general framework followed by a demonstration of the performance and outputs of FOSTER. Two ALS-derived variables, the 95th percentile of first returns height (elev_p95) and canopy cover above mean height (cover), were imputed over a research forest in British Columbia, Canada with relative RMSE of 18.5% and 11.4% and relative bias of -0.6% and 1.4% respectively. The processing sequence developed within FOSTER represents an innovative and versatile framework that should be useful to researchers and managers alike looking to make forest management decisions over entire forest estates.
