[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The article focuses on one of the most often used GIS-based multicriteria analysis methods: the weighted linear combination (WLC). The WLC model has traditionally been used as a global approach based on the implicit assumption that its parameters do not vary as a function of geographical space. This assumption is often unrealistic in real-world situations. The article proposes a new approach to GIS-based multicriteria analysis. It develops a local form of the global WLC model. The range sensitivity principle is used as a central concept for developing the local WLC model. The principle postulates that the greater the range of criterion values is, the greater the weight assigned to that criterion should be. Consequently, the local criterion weight can be defined for each neighborhood within a study area as a function of the range of criterion values in a given neighborhood. The range of criterion values provides also the base for defining the local value function. The article presents the theory behind the local WLC modeling and illustrates an implementation of the model in a GIS environment. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) We show how methods proposed in the statistical community dealing with missing data may be applied for land cover classification, where optical observations are missing due to clouds and snow. The proposed method is divided into two stages: 1) cloud/snow classification and 2) training and land cover classification. The purpose of the cloud/snow classification stage is to determine which pixels are missing due to clouds and snow. All pixels in each optical image are classified into the classes cloud, snow, water, and vegetation using a suitable classifier. The pixels classified as cloud or snow are labeled as missing, and this information is used in the subsequent training and classification stage, which deals with classification of the pixels into various land cover classes. For land cover classification, we apply the maximum-likelihood (assuming normal distributions), -nearest neighbor, and Parzen classifiers, all modified to handle missing features. The classifiers are evaluated on Landsat (both Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) images covering a scene at about 900 m a.s.l. in the Hardangervidda mountain plateau in Southern Norway, where 4869 in situ samples of the land cover classes water, ridge, leeside, snowbed, mire, forest, and rock are obtained. The results show that proper modeling of the missing pixels improves the classification rate by 5%-10%, and by using multiple images, we increase the chance of observing the land cover type substantially. The nonparametric classifiers handle nonignorable missing-data mechanisms and are therefore particularly suitable for remote sensing applications where the pixels covered by snow and cloud may depend on the land cover type. [Termes IGN] image hyperspectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Approaches to combine local manifold learning (LML) and the k -nearest-neighbor (kNN) classifier are investigated for hyperspectral image classification. Based on supervised LML (SLML) and kNN, a new SLML-weighted kNN (SLML-W kNN) classifier is proposed. This method is appealing as it does not require dimensionality reduction and only depends on the weights provided by the kernel function of the specific ML method. Performance of the proposed classifier is compared to that of unsupervised LML (ULML) and SLML for dimensionality reduction in conjunction with the kNN (ULML- kNN and SLML-k NN). Three LML methods, locally linear embedding (LLE), local tangent space alignment (LTSA), and Laplacian eigenmaps, are investigated with these classifiers. In experiments with Hyperion and AVIRIS hyperspectral data, the proposed SLML-WkNN performed better than ULML- kNN and SLML-k NN, and the highest accuracies were obtained using weights provided by supervised LTSA and LLE. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Land use change models are increasingly being used to evaluate the effect of land change on climate and biodiversity and to generate scenarios of deforestation. Although many methods are available to model land transition potentials, they are usually not user-friendly and require the specification of many parameters, making the task difficult for decision makers not familiar with the tools, as well as making the process difficult to interpret. In this article we propose a simple method for modeling transition potentials. SimWeight is an instance-based learning algorithm based on the logic of the K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. The method identifies the relevance of each driver variable and predicts the transition potential of locations given known instances of change. A case study was used to demonstrate and validate the method. Comparison of results with the Multi-Layer Perceptron neural network (MLP) suggests that SimWeight performs similarly in its capacity to predict transition potentials, without the need for complex parameters. Another advantage of SimWeight is that it is amenable to parallelization for deployment on a cloud computing platform.
