[Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) A new individual tree-based algorithm for determining forest biomass using small footprint LiDAR data was developed and tested. This algorithm combines computer vision and optimization techniques to become the first training data-based algorithm specifically designed for processing forest LiDAR data. The computer vision portion of the algorithm uses generic properties of trees in small footprint LiDAR canopy height models (CHMs) to locate trees and find their crown boundaries and heights. The ways in which these generic properties are used for a specific scene and image type is dependent on 11 parameters, nine of which are set using training data and the Nelder-Mead simplex optimization procedure. Training data consist of small sections of the LiDAR data and corresponding ground data. After training, the biomass present in areas without ground measurements is determined by developing a regression equation between properties derived from the LiDAR data of the training stands and biomass, and then applying the equation to the new areas. A first test of this technique was performed using 25 plots (radius = 15 m) in a loblolly pine plantation in central Virginia, USA (37.42N, 78.68W) that was not intensively managed, together with corresponding data from a LiDAR canopy height model (resolution = 0.5 m). Results show correlations (r) between actual and predicted aboveground biomass ranging between 0.59 and 0.82, and RMSEs between 13.6 and 140.4 t/ha depending on the selection of training and testing plots, and the minimum diameter at breast height (7 or 10 cm) of trees included in the biomass estimate. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) From the recent availability of images recorded by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) airborne systems, automatic results of digital elevation models (DEMs) on urban structures have been published lately. This paper deals with automatic extraction of three-dimensional (3-D) buildings from stereoscopic high-resolution images recorded by the SAR airborne RAMSES sensor from the French Aerospace Research Center (ONERA). On these images, roofs are not very textured whereas typical strong L-shaped echoes are visible. These returns generally result from dihedral corners between ground and structures. They provide a part of the building footprints and the ground altitude, but not the building heights. Thus, we present an adapted processing scheme in two steps. First is stereoscopic structure extraction from L-shaped echoes. Buildings are detected on each image using the Hough transform. Then they are recognized during a stereoscopic refinement stage based on a criterion optimization. Second, is height measurement. As most of previous extracted footprints indicate the ground altitude, building heights are found by monoscopic and stereoscopic measures. Between structures, ground altitudes are obtained by a dense matching process. Experiments are performed on images representing an industrial area. Results are compared with a ground truth. Advantages and limitations of the method are brought out. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Displacement, an operation of cartographic generalization, resolves congestion and overlap of map features that is caused by enlargement of map symbols to ensure readability at reduced scales. Algorithms for displacement must honour spatial context, avoid creating secondary spatial conflicts, and retain spatial patterns and relations such as alignments and relative distances that characterize the original map features. We present an algorithm for displacement of buildings based on optimization. While existing approaches directly displace the individual buildings, our algorithm first forms a truss of elastic beams to capture important spatial patterns and preserve them during displacement. The algorithm proceeds in two phases. The first phase analyses spatial relationships to construct a truss as a weighted graph. The truss is initially based on the minimum spanning tree connecting the building centroids, with beam stiffness determined by spatial relationships. The second phase iteratively deforms the truss to minimize energy until a user-defined distance is achieved. At each iteration, it computes forces on the truss, calculates truss deformations, and adjusts all build positions simultaneously. A prototype has been implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. The results are cartographically pleasing ; in particular, spatial relationships between buildings are preserved. In this research a key aim was to extend a snakes optimization approach, allowing displacement of lines, to also be used for line smoothing. Furthermore, automated selection of control parameters is important .for fully automated solutions. An existing approach based on line segmentation was used to control the selection of smoothing parameters dependent on object characteristics. Additionally a new typification routine is presented, which uses the same preprocessed analysis for the segmentation of lines to find suitable candidates from curves bends. The typification is realized by deleting undersized bends and emphasizing the remaining curve bends. The main results of this research are two new algorithms for line generalization, where the importance of the line smoothing algorithm lies in the usage of a optimization approach which can also be used for line displacement.
