[Termes IGN] Soil Adjusted Vegetation IndexRésumé : (Auteur) This work describes a genetic programming (GP) approach that creates vegetation indices (vi's) to automatically detect the sum of healthy, dry, and dead vegetation. Nowadays, it is acknowledged that VI's are the most popular method for extracting vegetation information from satellite imagery. In particular, erosion models like the "Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation" (RUSLE) can use VI's as input to measure the effects of the RUSLE soil cover factor (C). However, the results are generally incomplete, because most indices recognize only healthy vegetation. The aim of this study is to devise a novel approach for designing new VI's that are better correlated with C, using field and satellite information. Our approach consists on stating the problem in terms of optimization through GP learning, building novel indices by iteratively recombining a set of numerical operators and spectral channels until the best composite operator is found. Experimental results illustrate the efficiency and reliability of our approach in contrast with traditional indices like those of the NDVI and SAVI family. This study provides evidence that similar problems related to soil erosion assessment could be analyzed with our proposed methodology. [Termes IGN] seuillage d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This study investigated the use of a genetic algorithm (GA) approach, a widely used optimization method, to identify optimum thresholds for remote sensing-based binary change detection. Automated GA-based calibration models using a moving threshold window (MTW) were developed and tested using a case study. Two sets of the bi-temporal QuickBird imagery were used to evaluate the new optimization models. The GA-based models using MTW were free from the assumption of symmetry of thresholds for difference- or ratio-type of change-enhanced images, unlike traditional binary change detection methods, allowing more flexibility and efficiency in selecting optimum thresholds. Exhaustive search techniques using symmetric threshold window (STW) and MTW were evaluated for comparison. The stability of the GA-based models in terms of accuracy variation was also examined. The GA-based calibration models successfully identified optimum thresholds without a significant decrease in accuracy. The GA-based models using MTW outperformed the GA-based model using STW in both calibration and validation, revealing that optimum thresholds tended to be asymmetric. Multiple change-enhanced images generally resulted in better performance than single change-enhanced images based on the GA-based models. [Termes IGN] regroupement de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of classifying an image into different homogeneous regions is viewed as the task of clustering the pixels in the intensity space. In particular, satellite images contain landcover types, some of which cover significantly large areas while some (e.g., bridges and roads) occupy relatively much smaller regions. Automatically detecting regions or clusters of such widely varying sizes is a challenging task. In this paper, a new real-coded modified differential evolution based automatic fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed which automatically evolves the number of clusters as well as the proper partitioning from a data set. Here, the assignment of points to different clusters is done based on a Xie-Beni index where the Euclidean distance is taken into consideration. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is first demonstrated for two numeric remote sensing data described in terms of feature vectors and then in identifying different landcover regions in remote sensing imagery. The superiority of the new method is demonstrated by comparing it with other existing techniques like automatic clustering using improved differential evolution, classical differential evolution based automatic fuzzy clustering, variable length genetic algorithm based fuzzy clustering, and well known fuzzy C-means algorithm both qualitatively and quantitatively. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A rapid increase of environmental data dimensionality emphasizes the importance of developing data-driven inductive approaches to geographic analysis. This article uses a loosely coupled strategy to combine the technique of self-organizing maps (SOM) with a new genetic algorithm (GA) for automatic identification of clusters in multidimensional environmental datasets. In the first stage, we employ the well-known classic SOM because it is able to handle the dimensional interactions and capture the number of clusters via visualization; and thus provide extraordinary insights into original data. In the second stage, this new GA rigorously delineates the cluster boundaries using a flexibly oriented elliptical search window. To test this approach, one synthetic and two real-world datasets are employed. The results confirm a more robust and reliable approach that provides a better understanding and interpretation of massive multivariate environmental datasets, thus maximizing our insights. Other key benefits include the fact that it provides a computationally fast and efficient environment to accurately detect clusters, and is highly flexible. In a nutshell, the article presents a computational approach to facilitate knowledge discovery of massive multivariate environmental datasets; as we are too familiar with their accelerating growth rate.
