[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Geological maps are an important information source used in the support of activities relating to mining, earth resources, hazards, and environmental studies. Owing to the complexity of this particular map type, the process of geological map generalization has not been comprehensively addressed, and thus a complete automated system for geological map generalization is not yet available. In particular, while in other areas of map generalization constraint-based techniques have become the prevailing approach in the past two decades, generalization methods for geological maps have rarely adopted this approach. This paper seeks to fill this gap by presenting a methodology for the automation of geological map generalization that builds on size constraints (i.e., constraints that deal with the minimum area and distance relations in individual or pairs of map features). The methodology starts by modeling relevant size constraints and then uses a workflow consisting of generalization operators that respond to violations of size constraints (elimination/selection, enlargement, aggregation, and displacement) as well as algorithms to implement these operators. We show that the automation of geological map generalization is possible using constraint-based modeling, leading to improved process control compared to current approaches. However, we also show the limitations of an approach that is solely based on size constraints and identify extensions for a more complete workflow. [Termes IGN] SlovénieRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we present issues arising from Terrestrial Laser Scanning of large natural caves using the example of Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Regarding pre-existing tachymetric survey of the passages and volumes calculated from them, the scanning of such a large cave was an even bigger challenge for the team. The cave of almost 6 km long passages with dimensions approx. 30 m x 40 m and max. heights up to 145 m, was scanned from 370 stations. Process of surveying the cave, involves establishing scanner positions through the cave, where scans will overlap, in a progressive route and once back on the surface, collecting, cleaning and stitching the scans into a point cloud 3D model. A total of 8.3 billion points were captured and 2,600 high-resolution photos taken. With Reigl’s RiSCAN Pro software, a point cloud model was registered and then exported to Hexagon’s 3D Reshaper to create a full surface model from which all measurements and calculations were made. Additionally, data acquisition using a camera on an unmanned airborne vehicle was used. By photogrammetric approach, digital terrain model of a surface was built and then tied to the cave model within 3D Reshaper. The resulting high resolution - point cloud model may be used for various purposes such as: volume calculations, detection of geological and speleogenetical features, etc. With a volume of 2.55 million cubic metres, Martel’s Chamber is confirmed to be the 11th largest cave chamber in the world at the moment. [Termes IGN] terrasseRésumé : (auteur) Agricultural terraces are important for agricultural production and soil-and-water conservation. They comprise treads and risers that require manual construction and maintenance. If managed improperly, risers will collapse, causing soil loss, gully erosion, and cultivation threats. However, mapping terrace risers remains a challenge. This study presents a novel approach to automatically map terrace risers by combining remote sensing images and digital elevation models (DEMs). First, a terraced hillslope was extracted via a hill-shading method and edges in the image were detected using a Canny edge detector. Next, the DEM was used to generate the contour direction, and edges along this direction were searched and coded as candidate terrace risers via directional detection. Finally, the results of directional detection and the edge image obtained from the Canny detector were overlaid to backtrack complete terrace risers. The approach was validated using four study areas with different topographic characteristics in the Loess Plateau, China. The results verify that the approach achieves outstanding performance and robustness in mapping terrace risers. The precision, recall, and F-measure were 90.81%–97.57%, 88.53%–94.10%, and 90.13%–95.80%, respectively. This approach is flexible and applicable with freely available images and DEM sources. [Termes IGN] ville intelligenteRésumé : (auteur) This article shows a novel geo-visualization method of dynamic spatiotemporal data that allows mobility and concentration of criminal activity to be study. The method was developed using, only and significantly, real data of Santiago de Cali (Colombia), collected by the Colombian National Police (PONAL). This method constitutes a tool that allows criminal influx to be analyzed by concentration, zone, time slot and date. In addition to the field experience of police commanders, it allows patterns of criminal activity to be detected, thereby enabling a better distribution and management of police resources allocated to crime deterrence, prevention and control. Additionally, it may be applied to the concepts of safe city and smart city of the PONAL within the architecture of Command and Control System (C2S) of Command and Control Centers for Public Safety. Furthermore, it contributes to a better situational awareness and improves the future projection, agility, efficiency and decision-making processes of police officers, which are all essential for fulfillment of police missions against crime. Finally, this was developed using an open source software, it can be adapted to any other city, be used with real-time data and be implemented, if necessary, with the geographic software of any other C2S. The robustness, accuracy, and runtime are generally given the highest priority in the design of appropriate algorithms. Most approaches that target general scenarios can only fulfill some of these factors, that is, robustness and accuracy come at the cost of increased runtime and vice versa. This paper proposes an object-based incremental registration strategy that accomplishes all of these objectives without the need for artificial targets, aiming at a specific scenario, the urban environment. The key is to decompose the degrees of freedom for the SE(3) transformation to three separate but closely related steps, considering that scanners are generally leveled in urban scenes: (1) 2D transformation with matches from line primitives, (2) vertical offset compensation by robust least-squares optimization, and (3) full SE(3) least-squares refinement using uniformly selected local patches. The robustness is prioritized in the whole pipeline, as structured first by a primitive-based registration and two least-squares optimizations with robust estimations that do not require specific keypoints. An object-based strategy for terrestrial point clouds is used to increase the reliability of the first step by the line primitives, which significantly reduces the search space without affecting the recall ratio. The least-squares optimization contributes to achieve a global optimum for the accurate registration. The three coupling steps are also more efficient than segregated coarse-to-fine registration. Experimental evaluations for point clouds acquired in both a metropolis and in old-style cities reveal that the proposed methods are superior to or on par with the state-of-the-art in robustness, accuracy, and runtime. In addition, the methods are also agnostic to the primitives adopted.
