[Termes IGN] milieu urbainRésumé : (Auteur) Estimation of the basic parameters, wall thickness and dielectric constant, is important in through-the-wall radar imaging. Ambiguities in wall characteristics will degrade the image focusing quality of synthetic-aperture radar. In order to obtain a quick and precise estimation of wall parameters, an equivalent propagation model of an electromagnetic wave in the air-wall-air medium is first developed in this paper. According to the developed propagation model, two filter-based approaches, denoted respectively as the echo-domain-filter-based method and the image-domain-filter-based method, are proposed to estimate wall thickness and dielectric constant by adjusting the two corresponding parameters of the echo-domain filter or the image-domain filter to obtain the best focusing quality of behind-the-wall targets. The processing schemes of the two methods show that the image-domain-filter-based method is more efficient because it does not involve imaging processing in each adjustment. Moreover, the image-domain-filter-based method is accelerated by reducing the dimension of searching space to better the computational efficiency further. Simulation results show that the proposed accelerating image-domain-filter-based method can provide quick and precise estimation of wall parameters. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (Auteur) Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an important indicator of mountain ecosystem status. A study on the seasonal changes of FVC can be beneficial for regional eco-environmental security, which contributes to the assessment of mountain ecosystem recovery and supports mountain forest planning and landscape reconstruction around megacities, for example, Beijing, China. Remote sensing has been demonstrated to be one of the most powerful and feasible tools for the investigation of mountain vegetation. However, topographic and atmospheric effects can produce enormous errors in the quantitative retrieval of FVC data from satellite images of mountainous areas. Moreover, the most commonly used analysis approach for assessing FVC seasonal fluctuations is based on per-pixel analysis regardless of the spatial context, which results in pixel-based FVC values that are feasible for landscape and ecosystem applications. To solve these problems, we proposed a new method that incorporates the use of a revised physically based (RPB) model to correct both atmospheric and terrain-caused illumination effects on Landsat images, an improved vegetation index (VI)-based technique for estimating the FVC, and an adaptive mean shift approach for object-based FVC segmentation. An array of metrics for segmented FVC analyses, including a variety of area metrics, patch metrics, shape metrics and diversity metrics, was generated. On the basis of the individual segmented FVC values and landscape metrics from multiple images of different dates, remote sensing of the seasonal variability of FVC was conducted over the mountainous area of Beijing, China. The experimental results indicate that (a) the mean value of the RPB–NDVI in all seasons was increased by approximately 10% compared with that of the atmospheric correction-NDVI; (b) a strong consistency was demonstrated between ground-based FVC observations and FVC estimated through remote sensing technology (R2 = 0.8527, RMSE = 0.0851); and (c) seasonal changes in the landscape characteristics existed, and the landscape diversity reached its maximum in May and June in the study area. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) We evaluated the cross-sensor compatibilities of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) across the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-14 and NOAA-19 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) (AVHRR/2 and AVHRR/3) bandpasses using a global set of Earth Observing One Hyperion hyperspectral data. Five levels of atmospheric correction were simulated to examine the impact of the atmosphere on intersensor NDVI compatibility. These were the uncorrected “top-of-atmosphere”; Rayleigh (RAY); Rayleigh and ozone (RO); Rayleigh, ozone, and water vapor (ROW); and total atmosphere-corrected “top-of-canopy (TOC)” reflectances. Among all possible sensor pairs examined, the highest compatibility was observed for VIIRS versus MODIS. Cross-sensor NDVI relationships between the two sensor bandpasses remained nearly the same throughout all levels of atmospheric correction. AVHRR/3-versus-AVHRR/2 NDVI relationships changed very little and also showed an equivalent level of compatibility to VIIRS versus MODIS across all levels of atmospheric correction although they were subject to systematic differences. Intersensor NDVI compatibilities of VIIRS and MODIS to AVHRR/2 and to AVHRR/3 were lower due primarily to the differential sensitivities of these sensors' near-infrared bands to the atmospheric water vapor effects. Comparisons of cross-sensor NDVI compatibilities where operational atmospheric correction schemes were assumed for each of the sensors suggest the need of VIIRS TOC NDVI for long-term continuity with MODIS and AVHRR, which is not currently produced as part of the standard VIIRS Vegetation Index Environmental Data Record. [Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (auteur) The main objective of the research presented in this article is to analyse the polarimetric characteristics of three main types of natural vegetation occurring in the Biebrza National Park – forests, shrubs and non-forest land communities covering wetlands. The variability of many different polarimetric products of signal decomposition, depending on the type of vegetation, the microwave image acquisition period and the method of their preliminary treatment, was analysed. An attempt was also made to assess how much polari-metric methods can be useful for modelling biophysical parameters of vegetation. The study used six dual-polarized (HH and HV) ALOS satellite images recorded during the growing season in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. The images were processed in parallel, using different parameters, in order to estimate the impact of the spatial resolution of images and methods of speckle noise filtering on the value of polarimetric characteristics of different types of vegetation. All methods of polarimetric signal decompositions available using ESA POLSARPRO 4.2 software were tested. Three of them, i.e. the Alpha parameter from the H/A/Alpha decomposition (Cloud and Pottier, 1996) containing information about the dominant scattering mechanisms and two types of entropy: the entropy from the H/A/Alpha decomposition and the Shannon Entropy were selected for further analysis. The analysed years differed quite significantly from one another in the agro-meteorological conditions of plant growth. It was a cause of significant differences between the values of polarimetric characteristics in images recorded at the same season but in different years. During the growing season individual products of polarimetric signal decomposition are characterized by different variability. This demonstrates the dependence of different polarimetric characteristics on various biophysical parameters of the environment. It was observed that they are characterized by greater information content than the backscattering coefficient, especially if they are subjected to the process of increasing the resolution (oversampling). They can be used to model the biophysical parameters of vegetation. [Termes IGN] traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) Processing of data from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), such as GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, can be considerably impeded by disturbances in the ionosphere. Cycle-slip detection and correction thus becomes a crucial component of robust software. Still, dealing with ionospheric cycle slips is not trivial due to scintillation effects in both the phase and the amplitude of the signals. In this contribution, a geometry-based approach with rigorous handling of the ionosphere is presented. A detailed analysis of the cycle-slip correction process is also tackled by examining its dependence on phase and code noise, non-dispersive effects and, of course, the ionosphere. The importance of stochastic modeling in validating the integer cycle-slip candidates is emphasized and illustrated through simulations. By examining the relationship between ionospheric bias and ionospheric constraint, it is shown that there is a limit in the magnitude of ionospheric delay variation that can be handled by the cycle-slip correction process. Those concepts are applied to GNSS data collected by stations in northern Canada, and show that enhanced cycle-slip detection can lead to decimeter-level improvements in the accuracy of kinematic PPP solutions with a 30-s sampling interval. Cycle-slip correction associated with ionospheric delay variations exceeding 50 cm is also demonstrated, although there are risks with such a procedure and these are pointed out.
