[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation models (DEM) from satellite data are generated mainly from two types of datasets using completely different methods: photogrammetry for optical stereo images (e.g. SPOT5, IKONOS) and interferometry for Synthetic Aperture Radar data (InSAR, e.g. ERS-Tandem, SRTM). Both generation methods show advantages and disadvantages but have similar accuracy values in comparison to a reference DEM. The paper aims at showing the potential for combined usage of several DSM (derived with different sensors and methods) to improve the overall accuracy. Some results are given for DEM fusion utilizing height error maps for each DSM and for DEM integration, where single point information from another DSM is inserted during the triangulation process. The quality of the DSM derived from one source and of the combined DSM depends on the steepness of the terrain and on the land cover type. For flat terrain or moderate hilly landscapes, a height accuracy in the order of 5 meters or better can be achieved for the mentioned sensors. Two test areas are chosen, where many different data sets are available and much knowledge exists from previous studies. The first test area is a region in the south-eastern part of Bavaria comprising a mostly hilly, post-glacial landscape including lakes and also mountains of the German Alps. The second test area is located in Catalonia, Spain, and includes the city of Barcelona as well as a mostly hilly terrain with some steep slopes and additionally the Mediterranean coast. The received DSM are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to the reference DEM with superior quality by looking at profiles and sub-area statistics. The results show that an improvement of the fused DSM and the integrated DSM can be quantitatively measured. Although the overall statistics for a larger region does show only a slight improvement, local errors can be reduced significantly so that the overall accuracy of the combined DSM is higher. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) A precise simulation of soil water content (SWC) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in a region or a catchment depends on the accuracy of the spatial data inputs. In this study, we developed a simple grid-based soil water balance model. In this model, remotely sensed vegetation data are used to estimate spatial distributions of daily SWC and ETa rates. The model was validated by comparing simulated SWC with the measured by gravimetric method and time domain reflectometry (TDR) at an experimental test site located in Northeastern Germany in the time period 1993–1998. The index of agreement IA and the root-mean-square error obtained from the comparison of the TDR measurements to the simulated values ranged from 0.45 to 0.80 and from 0.029 to 0.061 cm3/cm3, respectively. The comparison of simulated ETa rates to those measured by four large-scale lysimeters at another test site showed IA values above 0.87 and R2 values higher than 0.59. For the regional application of the model, a method was developed to integrate the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) vegetation data into the model. The MODIS data used in our study consist of 16-day normalized difference vegetation index and 8-day leaf area index products. Regarding the spatial application of the model, our approach was tested in a catchment located in Northeastern Germany in 2001–2003. A sufficient correlation between daily discharge rates measured at two observation gauges in the catchment and the corresponding simulated discharge rates and also good correlations between the simulated ETa rates and the MODIS-leaf area index values indicate that the model is an appropriate simulation tool at regional scale if the corresponding additional spatial databases regarding surface and soil properties are available. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) For monitoring environmental changes, new digital remote sensors have become available that allow monitoring and change detection analyses at resolutions and scales that were deemed impossible just a few years ago. The advent of airborne stereo scanners of ultra high spatial resolution offers the possibility of a complete digital remote sensing processing System. Current sensors include the High-resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the ADS-40, and the Digital Mapping Camera (DMC). For automated analysis, however, the new sensors require also new processing techniques. This paper presents results of change monitoring analyses for areas along the shorelines of the Elbe and Weser rivers in North Germany using integrated HRSC and GIS datasets. An automated procedure for highly accurate mapping was developed which is based on a hierarchical stepwise approach integrating GIS methods and digital surface information in this process. This approach allows the production of GIS maps that are more detailed and accurate than those that were previously produced by conventional means. Within the GIS environment, the multitemporal analysis also allows the exact quantification and location of changes of the protected biotope types. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The generation of digital elevation models (DEMs) by space-born InSAR is a well-established remote sensing technique. Several application projects as for instance the shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) have proven the outstanding capability to map the Earth's surface globally with great accuracy and constant resolution applying this technique. The short mission time of only eleven days guaranteed the homogenous quality of the generated DEM. The typical InSAR-DEM provides a snapshot of the terrain elevation at the time of acquisition including the vegetation cover. A limitation is that the Earth's cover is mapped only down to a mean radar penetration depth. Polarimetry can be applied to separate volume scattering from the double bounce effect on the ground in forested areas. But in urban areas this scattering model can not be applied. This is in contrast to the great interest in urban areas caused by the high population density and change. Nowadays, the permanent scatterer interferometry which has been invented at POLIMI is working operational and can provide supplementing information. It allows a monitoring of urban areas over time spans of more than ten years. E.g. the subsidence in such spots can be detected and monitored with millimetre accuracy. The separation of the orbit, atmosphere and topography phase effects form the basis for the extreme accuracy regarding the displacement measurement. Furthermore, the PS estimation results in a high precision DEM update at the PS position. The structure of the cities and the radar observation geometry are the reason that this simple elevation concept needs to be extended. It is very likely that more than one dominant scatterer is inside a resolution cell. Tomography can resolve this ambiguity and provides the reflectivity along cross slant range height. Consequently, a real but irregular sampled 3D map of the persistent radar scatterers can be generated which describes the city better. The dominant radar scatterers are related to buildings and other men made features. This is the reason the exact three-dimensional locations of the scatterers provide a lot of useful information on the area and the shape of the city and allowing various applications. Such a 3D map can be a better DEM input for each PS processing that allows an effective PS detection and optimal parameter estimation. A new parametric method for the detection and relative estimation of the two dominant scatterers configuration inside of a resolution cell has been developed. The developed method is more robust because it uses amplitude data only and complements the full tomography which includes the phase information. The city of Munich is one of DLR's testsite for the PS processing and the developed tomography algorithms. Examples for the generated data set and applications will be shown. The permanent scatterers are assessed in situ and the 3D position of the scatterers is checked and compared to the estimates.
