[Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (auteur) Key message : Using several experimental approaches, we have demonstrated that electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a reliable nondestructive tool for estimating the moisture content of heartwood in situ. ERT measurements show that water pockets in heartwood (wetwood) are present in a large majority (90%) of silver fir ( Abies alba Mill.) trunks.
Context : For wood professionals, the presence of wetwood in wood logs leads to an increase in costs, especially during the drying process. Assessing these internal properties in situ with a nondestructive method will provide reliable information for improved management of respective forests.
Aims : The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) tool to detect wetwood in standing trees and to estimate the mean moisture content (MC) of silver fir trunks.
Methods : The study was carried out in 3 forests located in the region “Massif Central” in France. We selected 58 silver fir trees, visually healthy and without visible default. Each tree has been subject to regular ERT measurements for more than a year. At the same time, one to three cores were taken from each tree in order to measure the actual MC of the wood.
Results : 90% of the silver fir trees showed the presence of wetwood in their heartwood. Our results showed a significant correlation between the mean heartwood MC measured on cores and the mean electrical resistivity (ER) obtained with ERT.
Conclusion : The presence of wetwood occurs in a high proportion of the silver fir trees studied, and (ii) ERT can be used to estimate the average MC of the heartwood of standing trees. However, the data provided by ERT vary seasonally and do not allow the precise location of wetwood.

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (éditeur) At the centre of concerns related to curbing the decline in forest biodiversity caused by increasing anthropogenic pressure and global change, old-growth forests are mainly characterised by the continuity of their tree cover. This has been defined mainly by their appearance on historical maps and by ecological criteria dating back to certain temporal cut-off points (about two centuries). Inherited over hundreds, even thousands, of years of interaction between Man and Nature, these ancient forests have been managed and shaped by past societies to meet their various needs, both domestic and industrial. Also, studying the historical trajectories of such forests, their responses to environmental and anthropogenic stress, and the long-term consequences of past human activities, is essential in order to better understand their current ecology and rethink their conservation. The development of pluridisciplinary and interdisciplinary research (ecology, paleoecology, history, archaeology, geography, sociology) now makes it possible not only to push back the hitherto accepted thresholds of ancientness, but in particular to understand old forests in their entirety and complexity over the longer term. This book, comprising both theoretical and methodological contributions along with case studies, reflects the diversity of current approaches and thinking and promotes interdisciplinarity as the only route to a comprehensive understanding of ancient forests as natural and cultural assets. Note de contenu : I- Perception and management of ancient forests as a natural and cultural heritage
II- Investigating forest ancientness: advocating for interdisciplinarity
III- “At the edge of the forest”: other ways to think about ancient and old-growth forests

[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Recent technological advances in optical atomic clocks are opening new perspectives for the direct determination of geopotential differences between any two points at a centimeter-level accuracy in geoid height. However, so far detailed quantitative estimates of the possible improvement in geoid determination when adding such clock measurements to existing data are lacking. We present a first step in that direction with the aim and hope of triggering further work and efforts in this emerging field of chronometric geodesy and geophysics. We specifically focus on evaluating the contribution of this new kind of direct measurements in determining the geopotential at high spatial resolution (≈10 km). We studied two test areas, both located in France and corresponding to a middle (Massif Central) and high (Alps) mountainous terrain. These regions are interesting because the gravitational field strength varies greatly from place to place at high spatial resolution due to the complex topography. Our method consists in first generating a synthetic high-resolution geopotential map, then drawing synthetic measurement data (gravimetry and clock data) from it, and finally reconstructing the geopotential map from that data using least squares collocation. The quality of the reconstructed map is then assessed by comparing it to the original one used to generate the data. We show that adding only a few clock data points (less than 1% of the gravimetry data) reduces the bias significantly and improves the standard deviation by a factor 3. The effect of the data coverage and data quality on the results is investigated, and the trade-off between the measurement noise level and the number of data points is discussed. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The expansion of French forests both in surface area and growing stock is explored based on National Forest Inventory data and Daubrée’s statistics (1908). The author studied their geographic variability under various ownership schemes (private, state or other regulated public forests) and depending on their composition (hardwood/softwood). Between 1908 and 2010, the increase in surface area was 5.1 million hectares (+ 50 %) with the fastest expansion rate in the Massif Central, and hardwoods gaining ground twice as fast as softwoods, although their overall proportions remained unchanged. Between 1975 and 2010, growing stock (+ 59 %, + 930 million cubic metres) developed three times more quickly than surface area but varied considerably between geographic locations: with area taking the lead in southern France and Brittany while in the Massif Central growing stock was preeminent, pointing to a certain continuity in relation to previous expansion of forest area. Over the same period, private forests and other regulated public forests experienced similar relative surface area variations (+ 20 %), but private forests accumulated twice as much growing stock (+ 80 %) as public forests. Between 1987 and 1994, private deciduous forests increased the most (+ 280 000 ha and + 105 million cubic metres), followed by private coniferous forests (+ 60 000 ha and + 63 million cubic metres). In the recent decade (2006-2015), increases in areas and stocks have continued at a pace of respectively 120 000 ha/year and 44 million cubic metres suggesting that this trend will continue over coming decades.
