[Termes IGN] sédimentRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing has traditionally been used to retrieve water constituents by establishing a relationship between in situ measured quantities and image-derived products. Motivated by the dramatically improved potential of the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (ldcm), this paper describes a different approach for water constituent retrieval where both thermal and visible spectral bands of the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) instrument on board Landsat-7 are utilized. In this effort, Landsat data is integrated with a 3D hydrodynamic model to obtain profiles of particles and dissolved matter in the near shore zone in the vicinity of two river discharges. The procedure is based upon perform-ing many hydrodynamic simulations by adjusting input environmental/physical variables and generating Look-Up-Tables (LUTs). The best match, obtained using optimization, demonstrated an average root-mean-squared-error (RMSE) of 0.68 percent, i.e., 0.0068 reflectance units, calculated over the two river plumes. It is concluded that calibrating a physics-based model using the Landsat-7 imagery can provide a more lucid insight into the dynamics of spatially non-uniform waters. [Termes IGN] sédimentationRésumé : (Auteur) The advent of satellite remote sensing has provided a huge opportunity to geomorphologists to study the temporal dynamics of large rivers. The repetitive coverage of satellite data is an important archive to reconstruct historical-scale dynamics of large rivers and to understand the causal factors. In the lower reaches of the Ganga River around Farakka, natural as well as anthropogenic factors have influenced large-scale dynamics of the river during the last 234 years. The construction of the Farakka barrage was started in 1961 and was completed in 1971 except the feeder canal. The barrage was finally commissioned in 1975 but the serious problems of aggradation both upstream and downstream of the barrage had started much earlier resulting in significant changes in channel morphology and position. The channel upstream of the Farakka barrage has moved towards the east but channel shifting downstream of the Farakka barrage has been erratic. We argue that sedimentological readjustments due to aggradation and bar growth are the major factors influencing the river dynamics in this region. [Termes IGN] turbidité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) The remote sensing of Case 2 water has been far less successful than that of Case 1 water, due mainly to the complex interactions among optically active substances (e.g., phytoplankton, suspended sediments, colored dissolved organic matter, and water) in the former. To address this problem, we developed a spectral decomposition algorithm (SDA), based on a spectral linear mixture modeling approach. Through a tank experiment, we found that the SDA-based models were superior to conventional empirical models (e.g. using single band, band ratio, or arithmetic calculation of band) for accurate estimates of water quality parameters. In this paper, we develop a method for applying the SDA to Landsat-5 TM data on Lake Kasumigaura, a eutrophic lake in Japan characterized by high concentrations of suspended sediment, for mapping chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and non-phytoplankton suspended sediment (NPSS) distributions. The results show that the SDA-based estimation model can be obtained by a tank experiment. Moreover, by combining this estimation model with satellite-SRSs (standard reflectance spectra : i.e., spectral endmembers) derived from biooptical modeling, we can directly apply the model to a satellite image. The same SDA-based estimation model for Chl-a concentration was applied to two Landsat-5 TM images, one acquired in April 1994 and the other in February 2006. The average Chl-a estimation error between the two was 9.9%, a result that indicates the potential robustness of the SDA-based estimation model. The average estimation error of NPSS concentration from the 2006 Landsat-5 TM image was 15.9%. The key point for successfully applying the SDA-based estimation model to satellite data is the method used to obtain a suitable satellite-SRS for each end-member. [Termes IGN] zone arideRésumé : (éditeur) About one-third of the Earth's land surface experiences a desert climate, and this area supports approximately 15% of the planet's population. This percentage continues to grow, and with this growth comes the need to acquire and apply an understanding of desert geomorphology. Such an understanding is vital in managing scarce and fragile resources and in mitigating natural hazards. This authoritative reference book is comprehensive in its coverage of the geomorphology of desert environments, and is arranged thematically. It begins with an overview of global deserts, proceeds through treatments of weathering, hillslopes, rivers, piedmonts, lake basins, and aeolian surfaces, and concludes with a discussion of the role of climatic change. Written by a team of international authors, all of whom are active in the field, the chapters cover the spectrum of desert geomorphology. Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] sédimentRésumé : (Auteur) In the nowadays highly pressurized marine environment, a science-based approach to management becomes increasingly important. In many cases, the sediment nature and processes are the key to the understanding of the marine ecosystem, and can explain particularly the presence of soft-substrata habitats. For predictions of the occurrence of species and habitats, detailed sedimentological information is required. This paper presents a methodology to create high quality sedimentological data grids of grain-size fractions and the percentage of silt-clay. Based on a multibeam bathymetry terrain model, multiple sources of secondary information (multi-scale terrain variables) were derived. Through the use of the geostatistical technique, Kriging with an external drift (KED), this secondary information was used to assist in the interpolation of the sedimentological data. For comparison purposes, the more commonly used Ordinary Kriging technique was also applied. Validation indices indicated that KED gave better results for all of the maps.
