[Termes IGN] système de gestion de base de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The integrated management of heterogeneous spatial data, such as continuous fields and discrete data, is an important issue for the Geographic Information (GI) community. Indeed, GI users are forced to navigate among and operate with several tools in order to solve their spatial problems, due to the lack of systems capable of integrating different components, each meant to provide a specific solution. The aim of this article is to propose an OpenGeospatial-compliant solution which supports expert users in handling problems involving heterogeneous data by means of a seamless approach. A class hierarchy modeling spatial discrete objects, continuous data, relationships, and operations, is described, whereby data are organized in agreement with the binary representation. A running example is illustrated to support readers' understanding of the proposed solution. Finally, some guidelines about an implementation modality are given, to demonstrate the applicability of the proposal to an existing DBMS. [Termes IGN] standard OGCRésumé : (Auteur) Open source software offers freely available source code to the general public, thereby allowing for modifications and redistribution. Freedom to modify source code offers significant opportunities in the establishment of a Europe-wide spatial information infrastructure. The INSPIRE directive provides a legal framework for the establishment of a spatial information infrastructure across the European Union. This article describes a study on open source tools for the handling of INSPIRE-conformant data as carried out by the GIS4EU project. A case study is presented based on extension of the OpenJUMP workbench for downloading and displaying INPIRE-conformant data. [Termes IGN] structure de données localiséesRésumé : (Auteur) The FOSS4G 2010 conference revolves around the freely available geospatial software solutions and the developer and user communities that provide high quality and innovative products. Yes, you read that correctly, they create quality software that is freely including its source code. You are free to use and adapt it without paying any licence fees. Now how's that possible? [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Conventional object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) vendors provide extension mechanisms for adding user-defined types and functions to their own DBMSs. Here, the extension mechanisms are implemented using a highlevel (typically, SQL-level) interface. We call this mechanism loose-coupling. The advantage of loose-coupling is that it is easy to implement. However, it is not preferable for implementing new data types and operations in large databases when high performance is required. We have earlier proposed the tight-coupling architecture (Whang et al. 2002, 2005) to satisfy this requirement. In tight-coupling, new data types and operations are integrated into the core of the DBMS engine in the extensible type layer. Thus, they are supported in a consistent manner with high performance. This tight-coupling architecture is being used to incorporate information retrieval features and spatial database features into the Odysseus ORDBMS that has been under development at KAIST/AITrc for 19 years. In this paper, we introduce the tightly-coupled spatial database features of Odysseus/OpenGIS. By taking advantage of tight-coupling, Odysseus/OpenGIS provides excellent performance in processing spatial queries as well as flexible concurrency control and recovery on spatial data. We show the performance through extensive experiments. Finally, we present sample applications of a geographical information system (GIS) implemented using Odysseus/OpenGIS.
