[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) A numerical simulator of satellite microwave radiometric observations of mountainous scenes, developed in a previous study, has been used to predict the relief effects on the measurements of a spaceborne radiometer. For this purpose, the trends of the error due to topography, i.e., the difference between the antenna temperature calculated for a topographically variable surface and that computed for a flat terrain versus the parameters representing the relief, have been analyzed. The analysis has been mainly performed for a mountainous area in the Alps by assuming a simplified land-cover scenario consisting of bare terrain with two roughness conditions (smooth and rough soils) and considering L- and C-bands, i.e., those most suitable for soil moisture retrieval. The results have revealed that the error in satellite microwave radiometric observations is particularly correlated to the mean values of the height and slope of the radiometric pixel, as well as to the standard deviations of the aspect angle and local incidence angle. Both a regression analysis and a neural-network approach have been applied to estimate the error as a function of the parameters representing the relief, using the simulator to build training and test sets. The prediction of the topography effects and their correction in radiometric images have turned out to be feasible, at least for the scenarios considered in this study. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Water vapor is a key variable in numerical weather prediction, as it plays an important role in atmospheric processes. Nonetheless, the distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere is observed with a coarse resolution in time and space compared to the resolution of numerical weather models. GPS water vapor tomography is one of the promising methods to improve the resolution of water vapor measurements. This paper presents new parameterized approaches for the determination of water vapor distribution in the troposphere by GPS. We present the methods and give first results validating the approaches. The parameterization of voxels (volumetric pixels) by trilinear and spline functions in ellipsoidal coordinates are introduced in this study. The evolution in time of the refractivity field is modeled by a Kalman filter with a temporal resolution of 30s, which corresponds to the available GPS-data rate. The algorithms are tested with simulated and with real data from more than 40 permanent GPS receiver stations in Switzerland and adjoining regions covering alpine areas. The investigations show the potential of the new parameterized approaches to yield superior results compared to the non parametric classical one. The accuracy of the tomographic result is quantified by the inter-quartile range (IQR), which is decreased by 10–20% with the new approaches. Further, parameterized voxel solutions have a substantially smaller maximal error than the non parameterized ones. Simulations show a limited ability to resolve vertical structures above the top station of the network with GPS tomography. [Termes IGN] volume (grandeur)Résumé : (Auteur) A panoramic, non-metric, Horizont camera has been used for regular, monthly, close-range photography of the rapidly retreating Triglav glacier in Slovenia since 1976. The unfavourable geometry of the convergent images taken from the two camera stations has made any direct stereoscopic observation and recording impossible. The aim of this research was to define the most useful method for acquiring 3D data from these panoramic, convergent images. The Horizont camera was calibrated and three methods were then tested: the generation of pseudo-orthophotographs, the application of 2D clinometry and the interactive orientation of a detailed digital elevation model (DEM) on the images. The third turned out to be the only method suitable for determining the boundary of the Triglav glacier. The interactive orientation of a detailed DEM on the Horizont images is described in detail. The 3D glacier boundary can be acquired from individual Horizont images (camera stations A and B) enabling the computation of the glacier’s area and theoretical volume. By repeating the glacier boundary acquisition for different orientation parameters, the standard deviations of the glacier area and theoretical volume were computed. Because of the more precise average area and volume measurements achieved with the camera station B images, only these were chosen for the glacier disappearance study. Every third year between 1976 and 2005 the Horizont images were used to compute the changes in the area and volume of the glacier. The glacier area was found to have reduced to 8% of its earlier size, from 15 ha in 1976 to 1·2 ha in 2000. However, owing to harsher than average winters since then the decline in the glacier area was found to have slowed in the past decade (2000 to 2009). The glacier’s theoretical volume decreased roughly exponentially from 1976 to 2005 Numéro de notice : A2011-079 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article DOI : 10.1111/j.1477-9730.2011.00622.x Date de publication en ligne : 16/03/2011 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1477-9730.2011.00622.x Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=30860

[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreMots-clés libres : Phenology Leaf unfolding Deciduous forest Elevation VEGETATION Perpendicular vegetation index temporal unmixing Résumé : (auteur) In mountain forest ecosystems where elevation gradients are prominent, temperature gradient-based phenological variability can be high. However, there are few studies that assess the capability of remote sensing observations to monitor ecosystem phenology along elevation gradients, despite their relevance under climate change. We investigated the potential of medium resolution remotely sensed data to monitor the elevation variations in the seasonal dynamics of a temperate deciduous broadleaf forested ecosystem. Further, we explored the impact of elevation on the onset of spring leafing. This study was based on the analysis of multi-annual time-series of VEGETATION data acquired over the French Pyrenees Mountain Region (FPMR), in conjunction with simultaneous ground-based observations of leaf phenology made for two dominant tree species in the region (oak and beech). The seasonal variations in the perpendicular vegetation index (PVI) were analyzed during a five-year period (2002 to 2006). The five years of data were averaged into a one sole year in order to fill the numerous large spatio-temporal gaps due to cloud and snow presence – frequent in mountains – without altering the temporal resolution. Since a VEGETATION pixel (1 km²) includes several types of land cover, the broadleaf forest-specific seasonal dynamics of PVI was reconstructed pixel-by-pixel using a temporal unmixing method based on a non-parametric statistical approach. The spatial pattern of the seasonal response of PVI was clearly consistent with the relief. Nevertheless the elevational or geographic range of tree species, which differ in their phenology sensitivity to temperature, also has a significant impact on this pattern. The reduction in the growing season length with elevation was clearly observable from the delay in the increase of PVI in spring and from the advance of its decrease in the fall. The elevation variations in leaf flushing timing were estimated from the temporal change in PVI in spring over the study area. They were found to be consistent with those measured in situ (R2 > 0.95). It was deduced that, over FPMR, the mean delay of leaf flushing timing for every 100 m increase in elevation was estimated be approximately 2.3 days. The expected estimation error of satellite-based leaf unfolding date for a given elevation was approximately 2 days. This accuracy can be considered as satisfactory since it would allow us to detect changes in leafing timing of deciduous broadleaf forests with a magnitude equivalent to that due to an elevation variation of 100 m (2.3 days on average), or in other words, to that caused by a variation in the mean annual air temperature of 0.5 °C. Although averaging the VEGETATION data over five years led to a loss of interannual information, it was found to be a robust approach to characterise the elevation variations in spring leafing and its long-term trends.
