Over recent years, two avalanche paths have been used routinely to release avalanches and study avalanche dynamics and interactions between avalanches and obstacles. Avalanche flows are generally dense and dry, sometimes with a powder cloud on top. Main avalanche path no. 2 is dedicated to studies on avalanche dynamics. Within the flow of the avalanche, flow height and vertical profiles of pressure and velocity are measured along a 3.5 m tripod. The snow volume released in the release zone is quantified by differential analysis of laser scanning measurements performed before and after triggering. High-speed positioning of the avalanche front along the track is carried out by terrestrial oblique photogrammetry. Above the dense layer, the upper layer of the avalanche is characterized by particle and air flux measurements. Avalanche path no. 1 is smaller in size and particularly well-suited to experiments on structures exposed to small to medium-size avalanches ( Numéro de notice : A2015--114 Affiliation des auteurs : ENSG+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.coldregions.2015.03.005 Date de publication en ligne : 18/03/2015 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.coldregions.2015.03.005 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90654

[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Recent advances in multi-view photogrammetry have resulted in a new class of algorithms and software tools for more automated surface reconstruction. These new techniques have a great potential to provide topographic information for geoscience applications at significantly lower costs than classical topographic and laser scanning surveys. Based on open-source libraries for multi-view stereo-photogrammetry and Structure-from-Motion, this study investigates the accuracy that can be obtained from several processing pipelines for the 3D surface reconstruction of landslides and the detection of changes over time. Two different algorithms for point-cloud comparison are tested and the accuracy of the resulting models is assessed against terrestrial and airborne LiDAR point clouds. Change detection over a period of more than two years allows a detailed assessment of the seasonal dynamics of the landslide; the possibility to estimate sediment volumes and 3D displacement are illustrated for the most active parts of the landslide. Algorithm parameters and the image acquisition protocols are found to have important impacts on the quality of the results and are discussed in detail. Uneven-aged management systems based on selection silviculture have become popular in European mountain forests and progressively replace other silvicultural practices. In time, this trend could lead to a homogenisation of the forest mosaic with consequences on structural indices recognised as beneficial to forest biodiversity.
Aims
This study was conducted to investigate the potential effects of a generalisation of the selection silvicultural system on structural diversity in the forest landscape with consequences for forest biodiversity conservation.
Methods
We compared four structural indices (tree species richness, diameter heterogeneity, deadwood volume and basal area of mature trees) in five different stand types typical of the northern French Alps, using forest plot data in the Vercors mountain range. Through virtual landscape simulations, we then calculated predicted mean proportions of stand types under two different conservation strategies: (i) maximising mean index values at the landscape level and (ii) maximising the number of plots in the landscape with index values above given thresholds.
Results
Multi-staged forests did not maximise all indices, the best solution being to combine the five stand types in uneven proportions to improve biodiversity conservation.
Conclusion
The expansion of selection silviculture in European heterogeneous forest landscapes could enhance biodiversity conservation if other stand types with complementary structural characteristics are maintained.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) While forest growth changes have been observed in many places worldwide, their spatial variation and environmental origin remain poorly documented. Analysis of these historical changes in contrasted regional contexts, and their mapping over continuous environmental gradients, may help uncover their environmental causes. The approach was tested on Norway spruce (Picea abies) in three western European mountain contexts (Massif Central, Alps and Jura), using National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. We explored the environmental factors influencing stand basal area increment (BAI) in each context. We then estimated and compared mean regional changes in BAI and related these to the regional environmental limitations evidenced. Within each region, we further mapped local BAI trends using a geographically weighted regression (GWR) approach. In each region, local estimates of BAI changes were finally correlated to environmental indicators. We found an increase in BAI in the three regions over 1980–2005, greater in the Massif Central (+71 %) than in the Alps (+19 %) and the Jura Mountains (+21 %). Inter-regional differences in BAI changes suggested the release of a thermal constraint—found more important in the Massif Central—by the strong temperature increase over the period, and a limitation by water availability in the Jura and the Alps Mountains. Spatial patterns of BAI change revealed significant local variations in the Massif Central and the Alps. From the correlation analysis, these were again found consistent with the hypothesis of an enhancing effect of climate warming in these mountain ranges. They were also related to local soil nutritional status in the two regions, and negatively related to nitrogen deposition level in the Massif Central. As a main outcome, a strong context and spatial scale dependence of productivity changes is emphasized. In addition, the enhancing effect of climate warming on productivity is suggested, with local modulation by climatic and nutritional conditions.
