[Termes IGN] projection cylindriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The adaptive composite map projection technique changes the projection to minimize distortion for the geographic area shown on a map. This article improves the transition between the Lambert azimuthal projection and the transverse equal-area cylindrical projection that are used by adaptive composite projections for portrait-format maps. Originally, a transverse Albers conic projection was suggested for transforming between these two projections, resulting in graticules that are not symmetric relative to the central meridian. We propose the alternative transverse Wagner transformation between the two projections and provide equations and parameters for the transition. The suggested technique results in a graticule that is symmetric relative to the central meridian, and a map transformation that is visually continuous with changing map scale. [Termes IGN] réseau ferroviaireRésumé : (Auteur) Map projections are an essential component of coordinate systems used in applications such as surveying, topographic mapping, and engineering, and care needs to be taken to select ones that minimize distortion for each case. This article explores the selection process for near-linear features on the surface of the Earth and derives limits for the extent of a project that can be projected within specified distortion tolerances. It is then demonstrated that a multifaceted set of projections of the Earth may be used to extend this concept to the mapping of features such as highways and railways that are quasi-linear but do not exactly follow a standard geometrical line (a great circle or a small circle) on the surface of the Earth. A continuous, conformal coordinate system may be derived in such situations, extending to indefinite length and applicable over a swath of several kilometers width, but it cannot be extended to cover situations with extensive variations in height. Instead, the Snake Projection is analyzed, and it is shown that this can be used to develop continuous (non-zonal) projected coordinate systems for major engineering projects extending for hundreds of kilometers and having extensive height ranges. Examples are shown of the application to railway projects. [Termes IGN] projectionRésumé : (auteur) The recent initiatives to digitize cultural heritage resources and publish them on the Web have renewed interest in historical maps for the diachronic analysis of territories in GIS applications. However, such analyses should not be done without a good understanding of the possibilities and limitations of geographical information provided by historical maps, i.e. their quality. One of the major concerns regarding historical maps quality is their positional planimetric accuracy which highly depends on survey techniques used at the time. As these techniques are not always thoroughly known and as ground truth is most of the time not sufficiently available, direct absolute evaluation approaches have been proposed to assess historical maps positional planimetric accuracy. In this article, we follow the intuition that the most widely adopted georeferencing-based approach for assessing the positional planimetric accuracy of historical maps can be adapted to provide an evaluation of the error caused by the survey process in cases like Paris atlases where the georeferencing transformation can be estimated with ground control points based on geodetic features and where the projection of the map can be approximated by a well known projected coordinate reference system. We apply this tuned approach on the Verniquet atlas and evaluate the validity of our hypothesis about projection approximation.
