[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) is integrated within a GIS framework to calculate soil loss spatially. For this module, algorithms and procedures were developed to derive the slope length factor (L) and steepness factor (S) from a DEM, then integrated with the R, K, C, and P factors to develop homogeneous patches (sub-units) within each field or river basin. Soil loss is determined for each patch within a study unit, and then combined to determine the fields' or river basin's average annual and total soil loss. Two case studies are presented. The first case study, in central Massachusetts, compares estimated soil loss values obtained for individual fields using the Idrisi RUSLE module to USDA-NRCS RUSLE field data. While soil loss results were similar, the RUSLE module allows fields to be partitioned into more similar units than practical in the field. This permits detailed spatial analysis of soil-loss patterns. The second case study compares soil-loss estimates for a catchment in southwestern Flanders, Belgium. This model-model comparison contrasts the results from the RUSLE module to the WATEM model-a grid cell based model based on the USLE/RUSLE but conceptualized in a multi-flow context. Results between the predicted soil losses utilizing the two different approaches are significantly correlated. However, estimated soil losses are consistently higher for the WATEM model. This likely reflects the differences between how the two models compute L as well as the contribution of ephemeral gullies and flow convergence which are incorporated in WATEM but not in RUSLE. [Termes IGN] sableRésumé : (Auteur) The University of Florida (UF) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) are collaborating on a program to improve the quantitative monitoring of Florida's beaches, which are subject to erosion and catastrophic damage from seasonal storms. Each year, a segment of the Florida coastline will be mapped using Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (ALSM) technology (also referred to as LIDAR). The ALSM surveys, conducted by UF staff and students, nominally extend from a few hundred feet offshore to about 1500 ft inland. GPS observations are manually collected by FDEP personnel and used to generate profiles across the beach for comparison with profiles generated from the ALSM observations. Results from the first survey segment completed under the program, covering approximately 35 miles of beaches in northeast Florida, are presented. Additional results that demonstrate the ability to precisely quantify changes in beach topography and volume using ALSM data are also presented. [Termes IGN] triangulation localeRésumé : (Auteur) Triangulated irregular networks (TIN) can form the basis for multiple-resolution representations in distributed hydrogeomorphic simulations over complex basins. Current methods for deriving TIN meshes depend primarily on surface slope without considering other terrain attributes significant to the watershed response such as the specific basin area. As an alternative, we present a methodology for combining a hydrogeomorphic or landscape index with an unstructured triangulated mesh. Landscape indices provide a concise method for describing steady-state terrain processes by isolating the dominant physical factors. The mesh-generation algorithm results in an adaptive discretization that resembles the spatial pattern of the landscape index with a high resolution retained in areas expected to impact the basin response. We compare the proposed algorithm with a slope-preserving method as a means for initializing the terrain representation in two TIN-based hydrogeomorphic models. Through three case studies in saturation-excess runoff, transport-limited soil erosion and shallow landslide simulation, we assess the distributed model sensitivity to the triangulated terrain algorithm. Model comparisons reveal that the process-based triangulations focus the distributed simulation in regions anticipated via a steady-state index to affect the transient watershed response.
