[Termes IGN] régression des moindres carrés partielsRésumé : (auteur) An accurate estimation of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is important for carbon accounting. In this study, six methods, including partial least squares regression, regression kriging, k-nearest neighbour, support vector machines, random forest and high accuracy surface modelling (HASM), were used to simulate forest AGB. Forest AGB was mapped by combining Geoscience Laser Altimeter System data, optical imagery and field inventory data. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Wide Dynamic Range Vegetation Index (WDRVI0.2) of September and October, which had a stronger correlation with forest AGB than that of the peak growing season, were selected as predictor variables, along with tree cover percentage and three GLAS-derived parameters. The results of the different methods were evaluated. The HASM model had the best modelling accuracy (small MAE, RMSE, NRMSE, RMSV and NMSE and large R2). A forest AGB map of the study area was generated using the optimal model. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (auteur) This study proposes a new geometric calibration method for satellite laser altimeters based on waveform matching to solve the problems of poor initial pointing accuracy and a lack of control data. This non-real-time method obtains ground control points without a fixed calibration field. First, a large area with stepped surfaces is chosen from the laser altimetry coverage. Then, the laser echo waveforms are simulated using digital surface model (DSM) data of the stepped features. The real echo waveform attempts to match the simulated echo waveforms through a waveform matching model using a global constraint. Next, the control points of the laser altimeter are obtained through waveform matching. Finally, a geometric calibration model for laser altimeters is proposed to compensate for laser pointing and ranging errors. Two experiments were conducted to verify the calibration method using ICESat/GLAS data and airborne large-footprint laser data. Experimental results confirm that the method is feasible and results in an improvement in the elevation accuracy for the airborne altimeter from 2 to 0.5 m. [Termes IGN] mesure géodésiqueRésumé : (auteur) We use global data from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) to retrieve the lunar tidal Love number ℎ2 and find ℎ2=0.0387±0.0025. This result is in agreement with previous estimates from laser altimetry using crossover points of LOLA profiles. The Love numbers k2 and h2 are key constraints on planetary interior models. We further develop and apply a retrieval method based on a simultaneous inversion for the topography and the tidal signal benefiting from the large volume of LOLA data. By the application to the lunar tides, we also demonstrate the potential of the method for future altimetry experiments at other planetary bodies. The results of this study are very promising with respect to the determination of Mercury’s and Ganymede’s h2 from future altimeter measurements.

[Termes IGN] ventRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method to estimate forest parameter and surface topography from NASA's Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (glas). Their potential use as observational inputs to models is demonstrated using a wind-risk model for the UK, ForestGALES. Relative heights above ground were used as biophysical parameter estimators. Top Height was estimated with R2 = 0.73, RMSE = 4.5 m. Diameter at breast height estimates differed for conifer-dominated stands (R2 = 0.72, RMSE = 0.07 m) and for stands containing mostly broadleaves (R2 = 0.41, RMSE = 0.11 m). Ground elevation estimation produced R2 = 0.997, RMSE = 2.2 m. These three parameters were applied to ForestGALES for stand-level assessment of wind-throw risk. Stability is sensitive to small differences in tree dimensions, and therefore vegetation parameters require greater accuracy than those currently retrievable from GLAS to more reliably determine risk of wind-throw. Future satellite lidar mission such as NASA's DESDynl sensor aim to produce improved vegetation parameter estimation plus greater spatial cover-age which would offer more appropriate inputs for forestry models.
