[Termes IGN] vagueRésumé : (Auteur) A quantitative comparison of the collocated inter-annual significant wave height (SWH) data collected between 2006 and 2009 from buoys and altimeters at nine buoy locations (total n = 2241) in the Northern Indian Ocean is attempted for assessing the validity of daily averaged gridded altimeter significant wave height (ASWH) provided by AVISO for operational use. ASWH is underestimated by 0.20 m, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) is less than 0.30 m, the Scatter Index is less than 20%, and the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.90. Further, at three locations, the examination of the above statistics showed that the bias and RMSE is high during the southwest monsoon season compared with the Northeast monsoon. Scatter Index showed only slight variation (14–18%) for different ranges of SWH. The response of the daily average gridded ASWH data during extreme conditions (cyclones) in the vicinity of the buoy locations is poor at all compared buoy locations. The gridded ASWH from different satellite missions provided by AVISO can be used for basin scale validation experiments of the wave model and for climatological studies in the Indian Ocean, except during cyclone conditions. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to correct for long-term vertical land motions at tide gauges (TG) by estimating high-accurate GPS vertical velocities at co-located stations (GPS@TG), useful for long-term sea-level change studies and satellite altimeter drift monitoring. Global Positioning System (GPS) data reanalyses are mandatory when aiming at the highest consistency of the estimated products for the whole data period. The University of La Rochelle Consortium (ULR) has carried out several GPS data reanalysis campaigns with an increasing tracking network, an improving processing strategy and the best methodology. The geodetic results from the latest GPS velocity field estimated at ULR (named ULR5) are presented here. The velocity field includes 326 globally distributed GPS stations, from which 200 are GPS@TG (30% more than previous studies). The new GPS data processing strategy, the terrestrial frame definition and the velocity estimation procedures are described. The quality of the estimated vertical velocities is empirically assessed through internal and external velocity comparisons, including the analysis of the time-correlated noise content of the position time series, to be better than 0.6 mm/yr (2 sigma). The application of this velocity field is illustrated to appraise to what extent vertical land motions contaminate the estimates of satellite altimetry drifts. The impact on the altimeter-derived sea level trends was evaluated to be up to 0.6 mm/yr. Worldwide TGs were grouped into regions in order to explore long-term spatial sea level variability in the rates of sea level change. By taking into account the vertical land motion of the tide gauges, the dispersion of the observed sea level rates within each region was reduced by 60%. Long-term regional mean sea level variations up to 70% from the global mean were found. [Termes IGN] océanographie dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) With satellite radar altimetry, the oceanic geoid can be determined with high precision and resolution. Double differentiation of these data along satellite altimeter ground tracks yields along-track gravity gradients that can be used to compute vertical gravity gradients at ground track crossovers. One way to counteract the noise amplification due to the differentiation is to smooth the data using smoothing splines. Although the effect of satellite altimeter data noise has been investigated to some extent, the associated systematic errors have not been assessed so far. Here we show that some of the systematic errors cannot be neglected. In particular, we found that the negligence of the dynamic ocean topography (DOT) may introduce errors that are greater than the measurement noise induced errors. If the gravity gradients are to be used for GOCE validation, then also in this case the DOT may not be neglected as the signal at GOCE altitude of 260 km may be above the GOCE requirements. In addition, we show that the altimetry derived gravity gradients cannot be compared one-to-one with those in a local Cartesian frame. The differences are small compared with the total signal, but they may be larger than the satellite altimetry induced stochastic errors and may be above the GOCE requirements. The cubic splines second derivative truncation error requires the use of 10 Hz altimeter data for the computation of gravity gradients at the Earth's surface, while 1 Hz data are sufficient for validation at GOCE altitude.
