[Termes IGN] traverse géodésiqueIndex. décimale : 30.41 Géoïde Résumé : (Auteur) The European north-south GPS traverse, proposed by IAG SSG 3.88, should control and improve the European geoid. This traverse follows first order leveling lines included in the United European Leveling Network (UELN). From May to August 1986 and in July 1987, the central and northern part of this traverse (approx. 3000 km) was observed in cooperation with several European geodetic institutions using up to four TI 4100 receivers covering Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Both traverse parts contain 71 stations with distances of about 50 km. In addition, 8 stations were occupied for overlapping connections, and traverse links were established for connecting the fundamental stations Wettzell (VLBI and SLR) and Onsala (VLBI). The reconnaissance of the GPS stations and local connecting measurements were performed mainly by the responsible State Survey Agencies. The Statens Kartverk (Norway), The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (Sweden), the Lantmateriet (Sweden) and the Institut für Astronomische und Physikalische Geodäsie, TU München, participated active with own TI 4100 receivers. Final results show a GPS observation precision of a few cm for loops of some 100 km circumference. After transformation of the GPS results to geoïd heights using the leveled heights, comparisons with different existing gravimetric geoïd determinations including geopotential models have been performed. In addition, new geopotential models complete to degree and order 360 tailored to gravity data in Europe and gravimetric geoïd solutions using 6'x10' mean gravity anomalies have been investigated. The comparison with GPS and leveling yields rms discrepancies of ±0.1... 0.2 m over 1000 km traverse sections for the best solutions, but a strong slope is existing in Sweden and southern Norway in almost all solutions, which is probably caused by systematic errors in, the available gravity data for Scandinavia. This is confirmed by a tailored model using an updated gravity data set for Scandinavia and by a new geoïd computation at the Danish Geodetic Institute, where the slope has disappeared. If this new solution from the Danish Geodetic Institute is taken for the northern traverse section and our best solution for the central part, the rms discrepancy reduces to approx. ±0.2 m over 3000 km. Thus, a ±10-7 relative height accuracy seems to be achievable over long distances with the GPS/leveling and the gravimetric geoïd calculation techniques applied in this experiment. After preliminary determination of all spatial and zenith distances in the vertical quadrilateral (completed by its diagonals) with additional measurements of vertical deflections and precise levelling, the refraction angles can be derived from geometrical parameters exclusively. The method can only be applied in major differences of elevation (several 100 meters) and it claims extreme precision in the measurement of the spatial distances (md/d <= 1.10-6). The advantages of the method are that it requires none but the usual geodetic equipment and a simple mode of calculation including a rigorous theory of errors. The mean square error allotted to each refraction angle calculated, is derived from the mean square errors of the measured parameters according to the law of propagation of errors in correlated observations. The efficiency of the method has been proved by means of extensive series of measurements in a special testnetwork near Vienna (vertical quadrangle "Hohe Wand"). The required high standard of accuracy could be obtained with considerable dedication of time, instruments and personal efforts. The mean accuracy of the calculated angles of refraction was + 3cc. The mean square errors of the deducted large differences of elevation were less than 1 cm. As the zenith distances have been observed over 24 hours, fluctuations of the refraction angles during the day could be assessed and remarkable anomalies of refraction were detected. In particular the method may be applied to provide absolute refraction angles as a basis of comparison with refraction angles from meteorological models as especially in major differences of altitude the usual control by means of levelling is impracticable. The highly accurate linking of levelling lines in valleys with the vertical control network of mountain peaks is a further application of the method that justifies its expenditure.
