[Termes IGN] service écosystémiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mapping ecosystem services (ES) over large scales is important for environmental monitoring but is often prohibitively expensive and difficult. We test a hybrid, low-cost method of mapping ES indicators over large scales in Pará State, Brazil. Four ES indicators (vegetation carbon stocks, biodiversity index, soil chemical quality index and rates of water infiltration into soil) were measured in the field and then summarized spatially for regional land-cover classes derived from satellite imagery. The regionally mapped ES values correlated strongly with independent and local measures of ES. For example, regional estimates of the vegetation carbon stocks are strongly correlated with actual measures derived from field samples and validation data (significant anova test – p-value = 4.51e−9) and differed on average by only 20 Mg/ha from the field data. Our spatially-nested approach provides reliable and accurate maps of ES at both local and regional scales. Local maps account for the specificities of an area while regional maps provide an accurate generalization of an ES’ state. Such up-scaling methods infuse large-scale ES maps with localized data and enable the estimation of uncertainty of at regional scales. Our approach is first step towards the spatial characterization of ES at large and potentially global scales. [Termes IGN] positionnement par GNSSMots-clés libres : Weibull distribution Résumé : (Auteur) This study examines the potential of airborne laser scanning (ALS) to predict diameter distributions in an even-aged plantation of Eucalyptus urograndis in Brazil. The single-species plantation conditions allow different modelling alternatives to be compared without the presence of minor tree species or an understory layer affecting the results. Three modelling alternatives based on the two-parametric Weibull function form; parameter prediction, parameter recovery and distribution matching were tested with a k-nearest neighbour prediction (k-nn) method. We also evaluated a parameter prediction alternative, in which the Weibull distribution was predicted using field attributes. The results showed that ALS information can predict diameter distributions with an error margin of slightly more than 10 per cent of the RMSE of the mean of the third power of diameter, and with error index values between 50 and 60. The degree of accuracy was only slightly improved when the Weibull distribution was predicted using field attributes. According to the accuracy metrics, the differences between modelling alternatives were minor but parameter recovery and k-nn seem to be the most favourable ALS-based prediction methods. To conclude, the results showed a strong relationship between ALS information and diameter distributions in a tropical single-species plantation and we discuss how these results could be applied in other types of forests. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (Auteur) Improvements in the management of pine plantations result in multiple industrial and environmental benefits. Remote sensing techniques can dramatically increase the efficiency of plantation management by reducing or replacing time-consuming field sampling. We tested the utility and accuracy of combining field and airborne lidar data with Random Forest, a supervised machine learning algorithm, to estimate stem total and assortment (commercial and pulpwood) volumes in an industrial Pinus taeda L. forest plantation in southern Brazil. Random Forest was populated using field and lidar-derived forest metrics from 50 sample plots with trees ranging from three to nine years old. We found that a model defined as a function of only two metrics (height of the top of the canopy and the skewness of the vertical distribution of lidar points) has a very strong and unbiased predictive power. We found that predictions of total, commercial, and pulp volume, respectively, showed an adjusted R2 equal to 0.98, 0.98 and 0.96, with unbiased predictions of −0.17%, −0.12% and −0.23%, and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of 7.83%, 7.71% and 8.63%. Our methodology makes use of commercially available airborne lidar and widely used mathematical tools to provide solutions for increasing the industry efficiency in monitoring and managing wood volume. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The aim of this work was to assess techniques of land cover change detection in areas of Brazilian Forest and Savanna, using Landsat 5/TM images, and two iterative statistical methodologies based on geographical objects. The sensitivity of the methodologies was assessed in relation to the heterogeneity of the input data, the use of reflectance data and vegetation indices, and the use of different levels of confidence. The periods analyzed were from 2000 to 2006, and from 2006 to 2010. After the segmentation of images, the descriptive statistics average and standard deviation of each object were extracted. The determination of change objects was realized in an iterative way based on the Mahalanobis Distance and the chi-square distribution. The results were validated with an early visual detection and analyzed according to Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve. Significant gains were obtained by using vegetation masks and bands 3 and 4 for both areas tested with 94,67% and 95,02% of the objects correctly detected as changes, respectively for the areas of Forest and Savanna. The use of the NDVI and different images were not satisfactory in this study.
