[Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) Sentinel-1 (S-1) is a two-satellite constellation for continuity of operational synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations. Wave mode (WV) is the default mode over open ocean for S-1 to monitor global ocean waves and wind field. Therefore, proper radiometric calibration is essential to accurately infer these geophysical quantities. Based on the global data set acquired by S-1A WV, assessment of normalized radar cross section (NRCS) is carried out through comparison with CMOD5.N predictions over open ocean. The calibration accuracy quantified by NRCS residuals between SAR measurements and CMOD5.N demonstrates distinct features for two incidence angles (23.8° and 36.8°). Particularly, NRCS at 23.8° is overall consistent with CMOD5.N, while NRCS at 36.8° displays great deviation. Two recalibration methods are then implemented by examining the backscattering profile over Amazon rain forest and ocean calibration. Both methods show the necessity for recalibration and obtain comparable correction factors for WV1 and WV2, respectively. The NRCS residuals by applying both methods are significantly reduced toward zero. By comparison, ocean calibration is more efficient and practical to implement. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal convolutifRésumé : (auteur) The aim of the present study is to evaluate the potential of C-band SAR data from the Sentinel-1/2 instruments and machine learning algorithms for the estimation of forest above ground forest biomass (AGB) in a high-biomass tropical ecosystem. This study was carried out in Jamari National Forest, located in the Brazilian Amazon. The response variable was AGB (Mg/ha) estimated from airborne laser surveys. The following treatments were considered as model predictors: 1) Sentinel-1 Sigma 0 at VV and VH polarizations; 2) (1) plus Sentinel-1 textural metrics; 3) (2) plus Sentinel-2 bands and derived vegetation indices (LAI, RVI, SAVI, NDVI).Our modeling design estimated the relative importance of SAR vs. optical variables in explaining AGB. The modeling was performed with twelve machine-learning algorithms including, neural network and regression tree. The addition of texture and optical data provided a noticeable improvement (3%) over models with SAR backscatter only. The best model performance was achieved with the Random Tree algorithm. Our results demonstrate the potential of freely-available SAR data and machine learning for mapping AGB in tropical ecosystems. Note de contenu : Introduction générale

Given the magnitude of global environmental changes taking place, it is important that Earth Science researchers have access to spatiotemporal reasoning tools. One area of particular interest is land-use change. Using data obtained from images, researchers would like to express abstractions such as ‘land abandonment’, ‘forest regrowth’, and ‘agricultural intensification’. These abstractions are specific types of land-use trajectories, defined as multi-year paths from one land cover into another. Given this need, this paper introduces a spatiotemporal calculus for reasoning about land-use trajectories. Using Allen’s interval logic as a basis, we introduce new predicates that express cases of recurrence, conversion and evolution in land-use change. The proposed predicates are sufficient and necessary to express different kinds of land-use trajectories. Users can build expressions that describe how humans modify Earth’s terrestrial surface. In this way, scientists can better understand the environmental and economic effects of land-use change.
