[Termes IGN] résolution d'ambiguïtéRésumé : (Auteur) Precise GPS positioning relies on tracking the carrier-phase. The fractional part of carrier-phase can be measured directly using a standard phase-locked loop, but the integer part is ambiguous and the ambiguity must be resolved based on sequential carrier-phase measurements to ensure the required positioning precision. In the presence of large phase-measurement noise, as can be expected in a jamming environment for example, the amount of data required to resolve the integer ambiguity can be large, which requires a long time for any generic integer parameter estimation algorithm to converge. A key question of interest in significant applications of GPS where fast and accurate positioning is desired is then how the convergence time depends on the noise amplitude. Here we address this question by investigating integer least-squares estimation algorithms. Our theoretical derivation and numerical experiments indicate that the convergence time increases linearly with the noise variance, suggesting a less stringent requirement for the convergence time than intuitively expected, even in a jamming environment where the phase noise amplitude is large. This finding can be useful for practical design of GPS-based systems in a jamming environment, for which the ambiguity resolution time for precise positioning may be critical. [Termes IGN] positionnement cinématique en temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) [...] RTK systems, in common with other techniques, are susceptible to biases and errors such as ionospheric and tropospheric refraction along with line-of-sight-dependent phase-measurement effects including multipath, antenna phase-center variation, and carrier-phase phase wind-up. This latter phenomenon may not be familiar to all readers. It is a bias introduced into carrier-phase measurements by the rotation of a GPS receiver’s antenna. There is also a contribution from the rotation of a GPS satellite’s antenna as it orbits about the Earth. In developing an RTK-based vehicle navigation system at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), we have observed a few instances where the phase wind-up due to rotation of the rover receiving antenna can significantly degrade system performance. In this month’s column, we’ll look at carrier-phase wind-up, introducing three wind-up observables that allowed us to perform qualitative assessments of its effects on the UNB RTK system. One motivation behind such an assessment is to determine whether or not we need to proceed to the next step of implementing algorithms to correct for the effects of phase wind-up. I am joined by Dr. Don Kim, the chief architect and developer of the UNB RTK system, and graduate student Luis Serrano. [Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (Editeur) Most professional users will find the precision and reliability of the standalone GPS signal below standard. The error sources mentioned in the previous article play a large role in this assessment. Therefore, soon after the introduction of GPS, users started looking for methods and techniques to improve the reliability and precision of GPS positioning. Next to the improvement of the receivers themselves, a solution was found in the use of differential GPS (DGPS). Copyright Geoinformatics. Although great advances in geodetic GPS positioning precision and accuracy have been made over the last decade, improvements can still be made. This dissertation addresses GPS positioning error from two different directions---understanding and taking advantage of the repeating nature of some errors, or understanding and taking advantage of the relationship between errors in different contemporaneous GPS observables. In the area of high-rate GPS positioning, repeating errors have a substantial impact on the solution. In this dissertation, I study high-rate GPS error reduction using data from the 2002 Denali Fault earthquake. I apply the techniques of modified sidereal filtering and spatial filtering to positions from 25 GPS stations throughout northwestern North America, and I develop improvements to these methods such as data equalization and careful selection of sidereal filtering sites. Substantial reduction in noise magnitude is achieved through proper application of sidereal and spatial filters, and the resulting 'GPS seismograms' show excellent agreement to records from seismometers. Multipath, where GPS signals arrive by more than one path and thereby create a range error, can be understood through the GPS observables. Multipath effects on GPS carrier phase, pseudorange, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements are different but linked by the same underlying principles. In this dissertation, I explain multipath effects on the GPS observables and define multipath in terms of conditions specific to geodetic GPS installations and receivers. I develop two approaches to multipath errors, both using SNR measurements---a graphical method for multipath assessment, and a computational method for multipath modeling and carrier phase error reduction. The graphical method shows great promise for understanding spatial and temporal variability in multipath errors, but provides no avenue for removing these errors. The theory behind SNR modeling is robust, but complicated to implement with geodetic GPS measurements of SNR. I discuss the difficulties inherent in SNR modeling and demonstrate how this technique is of limited utility for geodetic GPS even in the most simple of multipath environments.
