[Termes descripteurs IGN] pondérationRésumé : (auteur) The spatial pattern of urban growth determines how the physical, socio-economic and environmental characteristics of urban areas change over time. Monitoring urban areas for early identification of spatial patterns facilitates assuring their sustainable growth. In this paper, we assess the use of spatio-temporal metrics from land-use/land-cover (LULC) maps to identify growth patterns. We applied LULC change models to simulate different scenarios of urban growth spatial patterns (i.e., expansion, compact, dispersed, road-based and leapfrog) on various baseline urban forms (i.e., monocentric, polycentric, sprawl and linear). Then, we computed the spatio-temporal metrics for the simulated scenarios, selected the most informative metrics by applying discriminant analysis and classified the growth patterns using clustering methods. Two metrics, Weighted mean expansion and Weighted Euclidean distance, which account for the densification, compactness and concentration of urban growth, were the most efficient for classifying the five growth patterns, despite the influence of the baseline urban form. These metrics have the potential to identify growth patterns for monitoring and evaluating the management of developing urban areas. In this article, we proposed a novel pole-like object extraction algorithm based on plane filtering from mobile Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. The proposed approach is composed of two parts. In the first part, a novel octree-based split scheme was proposed to fit initial planes from off-ground points. The results of the plane fitting contribute to the extraction of pole-like objects. In the second part, we proposed a novel method of pole-like object extraction by plane filtering based on local geometric feature restriction and isolation detection. The proposed approach is a new solution for detecting pole-like objects from mobile LiDAR data. The innovation in this article is that we assumed that each of the pole-like objects can be represented by a plane. Thus, the essence of extracting pole-like objects will be converted to plane selecting problem. The proposed method has been tested on three data sets captured from different scenes. The average completeness, correctness, and quality of our approach can reach up to 87.66%, 88.81%, and 79.03%, which is superior to state-of-the-art approaches. The experimental results indicate that our approach can extract pole-like objects robustly and efficiently. However, some problems can affect the accuracy of the existing algorithms, such as changes in environmental light conditions, shadows, the presence of objects of the same colour, significant changes in scale and rotation, as well as obstacles in front of the traffic signs. To overcome these difficulties, a reference image database is usually used that includes different modes of appearing the traffic signs in the images. In order to overcome the effects of scale and rotation, in this paper a new method is presented in which only one reference image is needed for each sign to recognise the traffic sign in an image. In the proposed method, imaging is done in stereo. Using the captured image pair, a virtual image is generated which is then used to recognise the sign. As a result, the recognition is carried out with a minimum number of reference images. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves recognition results. The traffic signs are recognised with 93.1% accuracy that enjoys a 4.9% improvement over traditional methods. Effectively capturing traffic volumes on a network scale is beneficial to Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O). Yet it is impractical to install sensors to cover a large road network. To address this issue, spatial prediction techniques are widely performed to estimate traffic volumes at sites without sensors. In retrospect, most relevant studies resort to machine learning methods and treat each prediction location independently during the training process, ignoring the potential spatial dependency among them. This paper presents an innovative spatial prediction method of hourly traffic volume on a network scale. To achieve this, we applied a state-of-the-art tree ensemble model - extreme gradient boosting tree (XGBoost) - to handle the large-scale features and hourly traffic volume samples, due to the model's powerful scalability. Moreover, spatial dependency among road segments is taken into account in the proposed model using graph theory. Specifically, we created a traffic network graph leveraging probe trajectory data, and implemented a graph-based approach - breadth first search (BFS) - to search neighboring sites in this graph for computing spatial dependency. The proposed spatial dependency feature is subsequently incorporated as a new feature fed into XGBoost. The proposed model is tested on the road network in the state of Utah. Numerical results not only indicate high computational efficiency of the proposed model, but also demonstrate significant improvement in prediction accuracy of hourly traffic volume comparing with the benchmarked models. [Termes descripteurs IGN] tessellationRésumé : (auteur) The traditional approach to mobile phone positioning is based on the assumption that the geographical location of a cell tower recorded in a Call Details Record (CDR) is a proxy for a device's location. A Voronoi tessellation is then constructed based on the entire network of cell towers and this tessellation is considered as a coordinate system, with the device located in a Voronoi polygon of a cell tower that is recorded in the CDR. If Voronoi-based positioning is correct, the uniqueness of the device trajectory is very high, and the device can be identified based on 3–5 of its recorded locations. We investigate a probabilistic approach to device positioning that is based on knowledge of each antennas' parameters and number of connections, as dependent on the distance to the antenna. The critical difference between the Voronoi-based and the real world layout is in the essential overlap of the antennas' service areas: The device that is located in a cell tower's polygon can be served by a more distant antenna that is chosen by the network system to balance the network load. Combining data on the distance distribution of the number of connections available for each antenna in the network, we resolve the overlap problem by applying Bayesian inference and construct a realistic distribution of the device location. Probabilistic device positioning demands a full revision of mobile phone privacy and new full set of tools for data analysis.
