[Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (Auteur) Atmospheric visibility is an important input for road and air transportation safety, as well as a good proxy to estimate the air quality. A model-driven approach is presented to monitor the meteorological visibility distance through use of ordinary outdoor cameras. Unlike in previous data-driven approaches, a physics-based model is proposed which describes the mapping function between the contrast distribution in the image and the atmospheric visibility. The model is non-linear, which allows encompassing a large spectrum of applications. The model assumes a continuous distribution of objects with respect to the distance in the scene and is estimated by a novel process. It is more robust to illumination variations by selecting the Lambertian surfaces in the scene. To evaluate the relevance of the approach, a publicly available database is used. When the model is fitted to short range data, the proposed method is shown to be effective and to improve on existing methods. In particular, it allows envisioning an easier deployment of these camera-based techniques on multiple observation sites. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents a methodology for designing a WebGIS framework intended for automatically analyzing spatial data and updating statistics of interest with new information inserted daily by multiple users via a Web portal. A practical example is used on vehicle accident data for assessing risk in specific road segments. Two main blocks integrated together will be described: the collaborative block and the data-analysis block. The former gives end-users computer-aided tools to view, insert, modify and manage data related to accidents and traffic monitoring sensors, whereas the latter is developed to automatically analyze the accident data coming from user's collaboration. Because different agencies can survey accident sites, a collaborative environment is necessary – and a Web-based solution is ideal – for permitting multi-user access and data insertion. A centralized approach to process the data in real time is described in all its components. Server-side Structured Query Language functions optimize performance by using dedicated libraries for spatial processing and re-structuring the attributes associated with elements which are consequently re-classified for correct color-scaling. The end-product is a system that provides a seamless integration of front-end tools for user collaboration and back-end tools to update accident risk statistics in real time and provide them to stakeholders. [Termes IGN] TorontoRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to assess the accuracy of using stereo high resolution satellite imagery for extracting the highway profiles and plans and constructing accurate 3D highway visualization model. Two stereo-pair IKONOS satellite images for Hong Kong and Toronto are geo-referenced by using a number of ground control points acquired by global positioning system measurements. A polynomial-based generic pushbroom model and rational function model are used to perform the sensor orientation, respectively. The highway alignments are extracted semi-automatically using stereoscopic measurements, and a 3D digital model along the highway is constructed. It is found that the highway alignments retrieved from the stereo IKONOS images result in less than 1-m root mean squared error in most of the cases in the horizontal and vertical directions. Near half-pixel accuracy can be achieved by using pansharpening stereo satellite imagery and under the condition that clear road surface markings can be identified along the highway.
