[Termes IGN] transportRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of transportation management has many variables but its solution must be guided by societal needs based on expected benefits and ways of achieving them. Thus transport management can be immensely enhanced and simplified by the use of a geospatial information system. Lagos, the commercial center of Nigeria, has been suffering from traffic congestion for decades. The loss suffered as a result of this congestion cannot be easily quantified economically and socially. This article presents empirical solutions to transportation problems in the Lagos Metropolis using the “Bottom–Top” approach, from “Transaction-Based” at local government level to “Multimodal” at the metropolitan level. The Stochastic User Utility Model was adopted to estimate the appropriate representation of human heterogeneity, flexibility and variability on mode choice relative to route travel times. The use of Assisted GPS Cameras provides some level of intelligence on the transportation routes. Results obtained include a travel demand survey (household-based) within a Traffic Zone and Sampled Trip Production/Trip Attraction Analysis based on Modes of Transportation. Geospatial Analysis carried out included Proposed Multimodal Transportation Routes with Transfer Points (TPs) and Incident Facility Management analysis. The synergy of Multimodal and Intelligent Transportation System (MITS) to obtain an integrated Multimodal Transaction-Based Intelligent Transportation System (MTBITS) will enhance efficient transportation systems for the Lagos Metropolis. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) This study examines how information design on road signs influences spatial learning. Participants viewed a sequence of signs as if travelling by car through a fictional environment, making turn choices according to assigned goals, and then completed a mapping task. After a second sign viewing, this time without turn decisions, participants repeated the mapping task. For the first mapping task, participants who viewed signs with spatial information presented cartographically produced more topologically-accurate maps than those viewing conventional signs. These differences faded after the second sign viewing. Our results suggest that guide signs with maps can facilitate incidental learning of spatial configuration. [Termes IGN] visibilité (optique)Résumé : (auteur) The measurement of atmospheric visibility is an important element for road and air transportation safety. We propose in this paper a novel estimator of the atmospheric visibility by already existing conventional highway cameras, with a technique based on the gradient magnitude selected by applying Lambert’s law with respect to changes in lighting conditions. The response of this estimator is calibrated by non-linear regression with data from a visibility meter installed in a test site which has been instrumented with a camera. Through our technique, atmospheric visibility estimates are obtained with an average error of 30% for images taken in the day, with sky luminance between 10 and 8000 cd m−2 and visibility distances up to 15 km. Our results allow us to envision practical implementation on roadsides in the near future to determine local visibility for the benefit of road safety, meteorological observation and air quality monitoring. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreRésumé : (Auteur) Among implicit information of laser points, the strength of reflection of laser points is closely related to the property of road materials which helps detecting road markings. This paper presents a novel approach to automatically extracting road markings from mobile lidar point clouds. An interpolation method is first used to generate a georeferenced feature image of the point cloud, which helps to isolate the points of road surfaces. Then, an algorithm is used to separate these points within a range according to their strength of reflection. The separated points are further segmented to remove non-road points based on height threshold. Finally, the outlines of road markings are extracted from the segmented points using the semantic knowledge of road markings. The results demonstrated that our method was very promising for automatic extraction of road markings from lidar point clouds collected by a land-based mobile lidar system, an Optech Lynx Mobile Mapper.
