[Termes IGN] raisonnement spatialRésumé : (Auteur) Mangroves are difficult to map accurately from satellite data by means of parametric classification because of their spectral similarity to other coastal vegetation despite their habitat being inside coastal waters. This study aims to improve the mapping accuracy through incorporation of such spatial knowledge about mangroves in the Waitemata Harbor of Auckland, New Zealand, from SPOT data. The spatial knowledge was combined with spectral knowledge in the mapping. Supervised classification was found to map stunted and lush mangroves at an accuracy of, respectively, 46.7 percent and 68.3 percent. These accuracy levels rose, respectively, to 83.3 percent and 96.7 percent after the spatial knowledge was sequentially incorporated into the mapping. A similar accuracy level was achieved from knowledge-based spatial reasoning. If integrated simultaneously with spectral knowledge, spatial knowledge did not improve the accuracy noticeably because of difficulty in gaining quality spectral knowledge. It is concluded that knowledge-based, post-classification processing considerably improves the accuracy of mapping mangroves over parametric classification. [Termes IGN] zone humideRésumé : (Auteur) Evidence of the rapid losses of coastal marshes calls for the application of remote sensing data. Nonetheless, many features indicative of incipient marsh loss, such as widening of tidal creeks and formation of small ponds, are often not readily detectable at the nominal 30 a x 30 m resolution of Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery, the general source for conventional satellite sensor-based data on wetlands. Spectral mixture modelling, where the proportional representation of land cover types can be estimated within pixels, offers a potential solution to the problem of assessing initial indications of loss in coastal marshes. Nevertheless, the simple linear mixture models most commonly employed can be subject to significant errors when applied to marshes due to the considerable variety of soil/sediment types in these environments. A new method is presented here which not only successfully reduces the spectral variability of soils, but also in the other principal components of vegetation and water, to a three-endmember model for estimating their fractional representation in TM data. Fractional representations for these variables in this method yield more reliable results than those obtained from unmixing corrected reflectance data. Though unmixing individual scenes may still be best achieved by extensive ground-referencing and image analysis, this technique is a robust approach for large-scale, semi-automated processing of many scenes in investigations of marsh surface condition. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) One important aspect in the management of the environment and its resources is establishing the spatial extent and the dynamics of changes in land cover and land use over time. This paper proposes a methodology for monitoring land cover change in coastal zones, specifically coastal mangrove wetlands. The approach was inspired by the availability of aerial photographs at several epochs and their high spatial resolution and geometric stability. The topographic features of coastal zones justify relaxing the rigorous and complicated procedure of photogrammetric orientation, while still achieving an adequate reliability and accuracy. The methodology developed in this paper is followed by a case study evaluating the validity and applicability of this technique in assessing changes in coastal mangrove forests.
