[Termes IGN] Rhode Island (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) The vegetation communities and spatial patterns on the Fire Island National Seashore are dynamic as the result of interactions with driving forces such as sand deposition, storm-driven over wash, salt spray, surface water, as well as with human disturbances. We used high spatial resolution QuickBird-2 satellite remote sensing data to map both terrestrial and submerged aquatic vegetation communities of the National Seashore. We adopted a stratified classification and unsupervised classification approach for mapping terrestrial vegetation types. Our classification scheme included detailed terrestrial vegetation types identified by previous vegetation mapping efforts of the National Park Service and three generalized categories of high-density seagrass, low-density seagrass coverages, and unvegetated bottom to map the submerged aquatic vegetation habitats. We used underwater videography, GPS-guided field reference photography, and bathymetric data to support remote sensing image classification and information extraction. This study achieved approximately 82% and 75% overall classification accuracy for the terrestrial and submerged aquatic vegetations, respectively, and provided an updated vegetation inventory and change analysis for the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network of the National Park Service. [Termes IGN] thermographieRésumé : (Auteur) Many previous studies have demonstrated the viability of estimating advective ocean surface currents from sequential infrared satellite imagery using the maximum cross-correlation (MCC) technique when applied to 1.1-km-resolution Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared imagery. Applied only to infrared imagery, cloud cover and undesirable viewing conditions (gaps in satellite data and edge-of-scan distortions) limit the spatial and temporal coverage of the resulting velocity fields. In addition, MCC currents are limited to those represented by the displacements of thermal surface patterns, and hence, isothermal flow is not detected by the MCC method. The possibility of supplementing MCC currents derived from thermal AVHRR imagery was examined, with currents calculated from 1.1-km-resolution Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color imagery, which often have spatial patterns complementary to the thermal infrared patterns. Statistical comparisons are carried out between yearlong collections of thermal and ocean color derived MCC velocities for the central California Current. It is found that the image surface patterns and resulting MCC velocities complement one another to reduce the effects of poor viewing conditions and isothermal flow. The two velocity products are found to agree quite well with a mean correlation of 0.74, a mean rms difference of 7.4 cm/s, and a mean bias less than 2 cm/s which is considerably smaller than the established absolute error of the MCC method. Merging the thermal and ocean color MCC velocity fields increases the spatial coverage by approximately 25% for this specific case study. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) For many questions of the coastal zone management, the knowledge on the biological and ecological state of coastal waters is of high importance. Due to the complexity of this water type, characterized by different classes of water constituents, a sophisticated methodology needs to be applied for quantitative remote sensing. Within the MAPP-Project (MERIS Applications and Regional Products Project) a specific remote sensing interpretation algorithm was developed for the regional assessment of water constituents in the Baltic Sea. This is a part of the ESA Cat-1 proposal ID 1413 GEMEL-3 ("Generation of MERIS Level-3 products for European multidisciplinary regional applications"). The operational implementation in a MERIS-value-adding system allows a near real-time estimation of chlorophyll sediment and gelbstoff concentrations on a regular basis. The algorithm, based on a principal component inversion (PCI) technique and the model will be introduced. The applicability of the model will be demonstrated on a couple of comparisons of MERIS reflectances and in-situ measurements. The potential of the model shall be demonstrated on available MERIS data. [Termes IGN] validation des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Measurements of water-leaving reflectance and optically active water constitu-ents in the Baltic Sea, the Namibian coastal area and the Atlantic Ocean were performed to validate MERIS Level-2 products. Two different validation methods were applied with the recommended match-up analysis based on comparison of in situ measurements with MERIS Level-2 products of simultaneous Envisat overpasses and the second analysis on comparison of natural variation ranges with derived MERIS product ranges. The MERIS water-leaving reflectances correlate to in situ shapes and magnitudes in all investigated areas. The comparison shows mean deviations of MERIS reflectances between 23% and 26% for the current official instrument processing facility (IFF 4.07) but only 20% for the prototype version 7.0 up to now only available to the validation team. The comparison of water constituents shows the underestimation of MERIS ALGAL_2 index, YSBPA and TSM in turbid waters of the Baltic Sea of the current instrument processing facility (IFF 4.07). The mean MERIS ALGAL_1 index is close to in situ values but the mean MERIS ALGAL_2 index, the MERIS YSBPA and MERIS TSM products are still too low in Namibian coastal areas for the prototype version 7.0. The investigations demonstrate the quality improvement of all MERIS Level-2 products from the current official instrument processing facility to the prototype version 7.0.
