[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) The spatial distribution of urban areas at the national and regional scales is critical for urban planners and governments to design sustainable and environment-friendly future development plans. The nighttime lights (NTL) data provide an effective way to monitor the urban at different scales however is usually achieved by using empirical threshold-based algorithms. This study proposed a novel Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach, using moderate resolution imageries as NTL, MODIS NDVI and land surface temperature data, to map urban areas. Both random and maximum dissimilarity distance algorithm sampling methods were considered and compared. The validation of the urban areas extracted from MDA-based ANN against the 2011 US national land cover data showed a reasonable quality (overall accuracy = 97.84; Kappa = 0.74) and achieved more accurate result than the threshold method. This study demonstrates that ANN can provide an effective, rapid, and accurate alternative in extracting urban built-up areas from NTL. [Termes IGN] télédétectionRésumé : (auteur) Mapping urban structures is a vital prerequisite for urban planners to enhance their database for a liveable city dedicated to sustainable development. Therefore, it is significant to measure urban grey and green structures at the scale of local districts to understand the urban structure and residential needs for urban ecosystem services. For a detailed analysis we exploit digital orthophotos (DOP), LiDAR data, and vital statistics. We use remote sensing techniques to create an Object-based Image Analysis (OBIA) that differentiates grey and green structures with high precision and at refined scale. This spatial information is linked with allocated population and health-related indicators to identify built-up types with highest population densities and local districts with deficits in the provision of different green structures. Our results show the share of built-up structures and the contribution of green structures to urban ecosystem services, human health and well-being at local district level. [Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) This paper provides a study of the changes in land use in urban environments in two cities, Wuhan, China and western Sydney in Australia. Since mixed pixels are a characteristic of medium resolution images such as Landsat, when used for the classification of urban areas, due to changes in urban ground cover within a pixel, Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) together with Super-Resolution Mapping (SRM) are employed to derive class fractions to generate classification maps at a higher spatial resolution using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) predicted Wavelet method. Landsat images over the two cities for a 30-year period, are classified in terms of vegetation, buildings, soil and water. The classifications are then processed using Indifrag software to assess the levels of fragmentation caused by changes in the areas of buildings, vegetation, water and soil over the 30 years. The extents of fragmentation of vegetation, buildings, water and soil for the two cities are compared, while the percentages of vegetation are compared with recommended percentages of green space for urban areas for the benefit of health and well-being of inhabitants. Changes in Ecosystem Service Values (ESVs) resulting from the urbanization have been assessed for Wuhan and Sydney. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for urban areas are being assessed by researchers to better understand how to achieve the sustainability of cities.
