[Termes IGN] valeur propreRésumé : (Auteur) The paper proposes an upgraded landmark-Isometric mapping (UL-Isomap) method to solve the two problems of landmark selection and computational complexity in dimensionality reduction using Landmark Isometric mapping (LIsomap) for hyperspectral imagery (HSI) classification. First, the vector quantization method is introduced to select proper landmarks for HSI data. The approach considers the variations in local density of pixels in the spectral space. It locates the unique landmarks representing the geometric structures of HSI data. Then, random projections are used to reduce the bands of HSI data. After that, the new method incorporates the Recursive Lanczos Bisection (RLB) algorithm to construct the fast approximate k-nearest neighbor graph. The RLB algorithm accompanied with random projections improves the speed of neighbor searching in UL-Isomap. After constructing the geodesic distance graph between landmarks and all pixels, the method uses a fast randomized low-rank approximate method to speed up the eigenvalue decomposition of the inner-product matrix in multidimensional scaling. Manifold coordinates of landmarks are then computed. Manifold coordinates of non-landmarks are computed through the pseudo inverse transformation of landmark coordinates. Five experiments on two different HSI datasets are run to test the new UL-Isomap method. Experimental results show that UL-Isomap surpasses LIsomap, both in the overall classification accuracy (OCA) and in computational speed, with a speed over 5 times faster. Moreover, the UL-Isomap method, when compared against the Isometric mapping (Isomap) method, obtains only slightly lower OCAs. [Termes IGN] signalisation routièreMots-clés libres : landmark wayfinding spatial knowledge perception recall route nature geospatial image 3D map elevation eye tracking Résumé : (auteur) This dissertation applies the research and methods of spatial cognition in order to contribute to the development of wayfinding support in geospatial applications. The design and development of geospatial applications, such as interactive maps and mobile navigation applications, has been typically founded on the expertise of surveying, cartography and geoinformatics. This has often led to relatively complex expert tools that many users find difficult to use. The research of spatial cognition can provide elementary understanding about human thinking in the use situations of these applications and supplement the knowledge gained using the usability research. Perception of landmarks along routes in nature was studied in season and time-of-day studies with participants who walked nature trails in summer, winter, day and night while thinking aloud about the surroundings. The recall of the route was measured afterwards using sketch-map drawing and photo recognition tasks. The think-aloud protocols were analysed using classification of propositions and natural language processing. The importance of landmarks for the human route perception in nature was confirmed. “Structures”, “Passages” and “Waters” were the most perceived landmark groups. Season and time-of-day significantly affected landmark perception and, based on the results, the adaptivity of geospatial applications in the studied conditions can be improved. The transfer of the empirically acquired knowledge of the landmark perception to geoinformatics was illustrated with a formal landmark ontology for hiking in nature. The measures of landmark recall were found unexpectedly similar in all the studied conditions. The similarity was explained by the salience of landmarks in nature and the structure of route-like sketch maps but also by the participants’ conceptions on what should be drawn on maps. “Passages” and “Structures” were the most-often drawn landmark groups on the sketch maps. Support of geospatial images for wayfinding was evaluated using a literaturebased evaluation framework. Visualisation of elevation was experimented with by rendering a 3D map, a derivative of which was compared to 2D elevation visualisations in an eye-tracking study. Vertical elements and elevation were found to be central wayfinding elements in geo-images and the aerial oblique vantage point the most effective image parameter for transferring spatial knowledge. The rendered 3D map was evaluated as cognitively demanding to look at but, however, showed potential in representing the terrain relief. The dissertation also considers challenges in the application of the methods of spatial cognition research and identifies directions for future studies. Note de contenu : 1. Introduction

[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) Photogrammetry and lidar are two technologies complementary/or 3D reconstruction. However, the problem is that the current registration methods of optical images with lidar data cannot satisfy all the requirements for the fusion of the above two technologies, especially for close-range photogrammetry and terrestrial lidar. In this paper, we propose a novel method for registration of optical images with terrestrial lidar data, which is implemented by minimizing the distances from the photogrammetric matching points to terrestrial lidar data surface, with the collinearity equation as the basic mathematical model. One advantage of this method is that it requires no feature extraction and segmentation from the lidar data. Another advantage is that non-rigid deformation caused by lens distortion can be eliminated through the use of bundle adjustment similar to self-calibration. In addition, experiments with two different data sets show that this method cannot only eliminate the influence of certain gross errors, but also offer a high accuracy of 3 mm to 5 mm. Therefore, the proposed registration method is proved to be more effective, accurate, and reliable. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) The application of nonimmersive virtual reality (VR) to the creation of rich cartographic representations in 3D is a current research area in cartography. However, the cartographic knowledge needed to build these representations is lacking. The consequences of this include misconceptions in map design that can inhibit or even impair understanding of the representation. A common task in cartographic VR is virtual navigation supported by 3D topographic maps. This geographical task gathers different knowledge schema, based on the selection of specific features for use as landmarks. In VR, there is a need for adaptation of cartographic representations to improve cartographic communication. The strategy adopted in this research uses Gestalt aspects to direct the user's selective attention to features that will act as landmarks. To evaluate this proposition, we compare sketch maps from 3D and conventional 2D topographic maps made by 43 volunteers and identify which features were used as landmarks and how they were drawn in the sketch maps. The number of landmarks identified by the user, their topology and orientation, and how the symbols were drawn highlights the success of this proposal for 3D topographic maps for virtual navigation.
