The objective of this paper is to evaluate the multi-polarized and fully polarimetric L-band airborne SAR-R99B data, in terms of their capability to distinguish among different agricultural crops in the western part of Bahia State, Brazil. Emphasis was given to coffee, cotton and pasture crops which were at well developed growing stages. Discrimination among crops was carried out using graphical analysis of mean backscatter values. Crop classification was performed for single and multiple polarizations, and fully polarimetric images with a classifier that uses the contextual Iterated Conditional Modes–ICM algorithm. The investigation confirmed the potential of L-band multi-polarized and polarimetric airborne SAR-R99B data to distinguish and classify agricultural crops in the tropical condition of the test-site. In addition, it clearly indicated the gradual and considerable improvement that was achieved going from single to three polarizations and from multi-polarized to fully polarimetric images. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Boundary line release criteria are increasingly applied to evaluate forest disturbance histories from tree-ring data. However, a number of important properties central to the technique have not been evaluated, including: (i) the ability of boundary line release criteria to standardize releases across various sites, species, and tree life stages (ii) the minimum sample sizes necessary for developing boundary lines, and (iii) the degree to which the criteria can resolve the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance event. In an analysis of eleven North American tree species, boundary line release criteria do not fully compensate for declines in release response a tree experiences with increasing age and size, with the exception Tsuga canadensis. A bootstrapping analysis indicates that approximately 50 000 ring width measurements are necessary to develop boundary line release criteria for a given species. In a Quercus prinus stand, boundary line release criteria better predict the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance than an earlier running mean technique. Despite certain limitations, boundary line release criteria have the potential to standardize release calculation across most life stages of a tree, and possibly among sites and species. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The integration of Hyperion and Ikonos imagery are used to differentiate the subtle spectral differences of landuse/ land-cover types on household farms in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (NEA) with an emphasis on secondary and successional forests. Approaches are examined that include the use of Principal Components Analysis to compress the Hyperion hyperspectral data to its most vital spectral channels; linear mixture modeling to derive subpixel fractions of land-use/land-cover types through the generation of spectral endmembers; and supervised and unsupervised classifications to map forest regrowth, agricultural crops and pasture, and other land-uses on 18 survey farms that are spatially coincident with the imagery. A longitudinal socio-economic and demographic survey (1990 and 1999) is used to characterize household farms; a community survey (2000) is used to assess nearby market towns and service centers; GIS is used to represent the resource endowments of farms and their geographic accessibility. Statistical relationships are examined using Spearman rank correlation coefficients to assess the linkages among a number of selected social, geographical, and biophysical variables and secondary and successional forest on household farms. Relationships suggest the importance of household characteristics, farm resources, and geographic access of secondary forests on surveyed household farms that were previously deforested and converted to agriculture through extensification processes. Results support the integrated use of hyperspectral and hyperspatial data for characterizing forest regrowth on household farms, and the use of multi-dimensional social survey data and GIS to assess plausible causes and consequences of land-use/land-cover dynamics in the NEA.
