[Termes IGN] télédétection en hyperfréquenceRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study is to determine spatio-temporal variations of water volume over inundated areas located in large river basins using combined observations from the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) onboard the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1), the Topex/Poseidon (T P) altimetry satellite, and in-situ hydrographic stations. Ultimately, the goal is to quantify the role of floodplains for partitioning water and ,sediment fluxes over the great fluvial basins of the world. SAR images are used to identify the type of surface (open water, inundated areas, forest) and, hence, the areas covered with water. Both radar altimetry data and in-situ hydrographic measurements yield water level time series. The basin of the Negro River, the tributary which carries the largest discharge to the Amazon River, was selected as a test site. By combining area estimates derived from radar images classification with changes in water level, variations of water volume (focusing on a seasonal cycle) have been obtained. The absence of relationship between water volume and inundated area, reflecting the diverse and widely dispersed floodplains of the basin, is one of the main result of this study. [Termes IGN] productivitéRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar images, combined with field measurements, were used to estimate net primary productivity (NPP) of aquatic vegetation in the lower Amazon. Input data for a NPP model are (i) the total biomass of aquatic vegetation, determined by radar imagery and field measurements and (ii) the area occupied by aquatic vegetation, determined from radar imagery. After correction for monthly biomass losses, the NPP of one growth cycle of aquatic vegetation was calculated in the image domain. The total net primary productivity of Hymenachne amplexicaitles, the dominant aquatic vegetation in the area, was on average 19 x 1011 gC yr-1 for the entire area. Spatially, lower values of produced organic carbon ( 5000 g Cm-2 yr-1) in areas closer to the Amazon River where the availability and influence of nutrient-rich water is greater. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional methods of land cover classification and mapping are limited in providing spatial data on the uncertainty of map labels. In this paper, we present a hybrid classifier approach using Decision Tree (DT) and ARTMAP neural network to providing confidence or uncertainty information via majority voting and other rules. The hybrid classifier is tested with AVHRR data to mapping land cover of North America. The two classifiers (DT and ARTMAP) tend to make predictive errors in different contexts. They show 68% agreement in classifying land cover of North America. A set of rules is developed to assign class labels for pixels where the two classifiers disagree. Levels of confidence in the hybrid classification derived from their individual voting (ARTmAP) and probability (DT) are used to assign confidence. The approach outlined in this paper produces two products a hybrid classification map as well as a confidence map based on the two classification schemes. The hybrid approach seems suitable to tackle a variety of classification problems in remote sensing and may ultimately aid map users in making more informed decisions. [Termes IGN] savaneRésumé : (Auteur) Estimates of carbon uptake at the continental scale become urgently needed as the role of countries as net sinks or sources of carbon gains political and economic importance. Despite uncertainties related to radiation use efficiency, the amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted by the canopy is a reliable estimator of primary production. Theoretical and empirical data support the relationship between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer sensor on National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration satellites and the fraction of PAR intercepted by green canopies. It is shown, for the period 1981-2000, that there is an overall increase in the radiation intercepted by the canopy over South America by 1.3%, with rainforests making the largest absolute contribution (45%), followed by savannas (23%). Under conditions of minimal agricultural use, disturbance and anthropogenic N deposition, humid temperate forests showed the highest proportional increase in NDVI during the last two decades (4.9%). Deserts showed a net reduction in NDVI relative to the 1981-1985 average (-4.4%). The expansion of agriculture over the last two decades was associated with NDVI reductions over subtropical forests. NDVI trends in South American region highlight a biome-dependent imprint of major global change noticeable in only two decades.
