[Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) So far, large-scale projects aiming to map forest attributes using aerial LiDAR data have been developed using ground sample plots acquired synchronously with LiDAR. No large projects have been developed using aerial LiDAR acquired independent of ground sample plot datasets. The goal of this study was to develop and validate large-scale parametric merchantable wood volume estimation models using existing historical ground sample plots. The models can be applied to large LiDAR datasets to map merchantable wood volume as a 10 × 10 m raster. The study demonstrated that a relative density index (RDI) based on a self-thinning equation and dominant height were suitable variables that can be calculated both for ground sample plots and LiDAR datasets. The resulting volume raster showed sound accuracy rates when compared to validation zones: R², 82.25%; RMSE, 13.7 m3/ha; and bias, −4.09 m3/ha. The results show that ground sample plot datasets acquired synchronously with LiDAR can be used to calculate the RDI and dominant height. These variables can consequently be used to map forest attributes over a large area with a high level of accuracy, thus not requiring the implementation of new costly sample plots. This paper details a method for extending dot maps in order to visualize changes in spatial patterns over time. Specifically, we outline a selective linear interpolation procedure to encode the time range in which dots are visible on a map, which then allows for temporal queries and animation. This methodology is exemplified first by animating population growth across the United States, and second, through an interactive application showing changing poverty distributions in Toronto, Canada. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) Social media platforms enable efficient traffic event detection by allowing users to produce geo-tagged content (e.g., tweets) known as geosocial media data. Geosocial media data improve road safety by providing timely updates for traffic flow and traffic control. Recent studies on traffic event detection with geosocial media data have been focused around keyword-based query approaches, where the event content was inferred by predetermined categories, to retrieve relevant traffic events. Spatiotemporal features associated with traffic-related posts have not been fully investigated. In this study, we filtered irrelevant posts with association rules. A spatiotemporal clustering-based method was then used to retrieve traffic events from these filtered posts, where the content of detected events was automatically inferred with a set of representative terms. For comparison, a typical text classification-based method was also used by classifying the posts filtered from association rules into different categories. By validating the detection results with vehicle travel speed data, we demonstrate that the former outperforms the latter in terms of the number of correctly detected traffic events from one-year of Twitter data in Toronto, Canada. Our proposed approach helps organizations and governments to be aware of when and where traffic events occur by identifying event hotspots and peak periods, which improves both traffic management and urban planning. [Termes IGN] WebSIGRésumé : (auteur) This article presents the development of a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) workflow that harvests high-volume and high-frequency near real-time data from a public General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) and calculates metrics for the assessment of on-time and route speed performance for a public transit system. The approach is applied to near real-time and static GTFS data collected over a 9-month period for the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The workflow uses two Azure Virtual Machines (VMs), one to harvest the data and the other to process observations in parallel using Python and the ArcGIS API libraries. A Web GIS application is described that queries data from MongoDB to visualize the performance results in spatiotemporal form. The purpose of the workflow and Web GIS application is to provide actionable information to transit planners to improve public transportation systems. The data management and analysis workflow is transferable to similar GTFS data from other cities.
