[Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferRésumé : (auteur) Land-use and land-cover change modeling helps us to understand the driving factors and impacts of human-induced land changes better, and depict likely future development paths. Uncertainty associated with various steps in the modeling process substantially influences the reliability of the results, but until now it has only rarely been addressed. In this study, we explore uncertainty in land-change modeling using a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian belief networks. We apply this approach to a case study of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and identify three modeling steps as sources of uncertainty: model structure, variable selection, and data preprocessing. For these three steps, we quantify the uncertainty and the respective impact on the outcome accuracy. The results indicate remarkable uncertainties in each of the steps. We demonstrate that a higher uncertainty in the land-change modeling process does not necessarily lead to a lower accuracy of the modeling outcome. Moreover, we show that the different uncertainty sources only slightly influence the ratio between quantity disagreement and allocation disagreement for the modeling outcome. We conclude that uncertainty is inherent in land-change modeling, and that future studies should address this uncertainty more explicitly to improve the robustness of modeling outcomes for science and decision-making. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Accurate spatial estimation of forest carbon stocks and their spatial uncertainties at local, regional, national, and global scales is a critical step in global carbon cycle modeling and management. This study aimed at enhancing the methods that are currently used in this area by combining plot data from the forest inventory and analysis program of the U.S. Forest Service and free landsat thematic mapper image data. Three mapping methods including linear regression, sequential Gaussian co-simulation, and block co-simulation algorithm were compared with respect to the accuracy of forest carbon stock estimates obtained for a study area in Southern Illinois, USA. The results indicated that although the linear regression resulted in smaller prediction errors than the sequential Gaussian co-simulation and the block co-simulation approaches, it also produced both negative and unreasonably large estimates, which is a serious drawback. Moreover, the sequential Gaussian co-simulation and the block co-simulation produced not only accurate carbon predictions, but also uncertainties for the local estimates. In addition, the block co-simulation approach scaled up both forest carbon stocks and the input uncertainties from finer to coarser spatial resolutions as is required for mapping forest carbon at national and global scales. Thus, the co-simulation and block co-simulation algorithms resolved an important current methodological challenge. [Termes IGN] récepteur bifréquenceRésumé : (auteur) This paper describes a preliminary study on the image orientation acquired by a hyperspectral frame camera for applications in small tropical forest areas with dense vegetation. Since access to the interior of forests is complicated and Ground Control Points (GCPs) are not available, this study conducts an assessment of the altimetry accuracy provided by control targets installed on one border of an image block, simulating it outside a forest. A lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was equipped with a hyperspectral camera and a dual-frequency GNSS receiver to collect images at two flying strips covering a vegetation area. The assessment experiments were based on Bundle Block Adjustment (BBA) with images of two spectral bands (from two sensors) using several weighted constraints in the camera position. Trials with GCPs (presignalized targets) positioned only on one side of the image block were compared with trials using GCPs in the corners. Analyses were performed on altimetry discrepancies obtained from altimetry checkpoints. The results showed a discrepancy in Z coordinate of approximately 40 cm using the proposed technique, which is sufficient for applications in forests. Pour réaliser un repère unique, il faut ajouter dans la combinaison les résultats de rattachements sur des sites colocalisés. L’observatoire astronomique de Rio Grande (Terre de Feu, Argentine) dispose d’une station DORIS et de deux stations GNSS permanentes, intégrées dans le réseau de l’IGS.
