[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Imagery from the Landsat Program has been used frequently as a source of auxiliary data for modeling land cover, as well as a variety of attributes associated with tree cover. With ready access to all scenes in the archive since 2008 due to the USGS Landsat Data Policy, new approaches to deriving such auxiliary data from dense Landsat time series are required. Several methods have previously been developed for use with finer temporal resolution imagery (e.g. AVHRR and MODIS), including image compositing and harmonic regression using Fourier series. The manuscript presents a study, using Minnesota, USA during the years 2009–2013 as the study area and timeframe. The study examined the relative predictive power of land cover models, in particular those related to tree cover, using predictor variables based solely on composite imagery versus those using estimated harmonic regression coefficients. The study used two common non-parametric modeling approaches (i.e. k-nearest neighbors and random forests) for fitting classification and regression models of multiple attributes measured on USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis plots using all available Landsat imagery for the study area and timeframe. The estimated Fourier coefficients developed by harmonic regression of tasseled cap transformation time series data were shown to be correlated with land cover, including tree cover. Regression models using estimated Fourier coefficients as predictor variables showed a two- to threefold increase in explained variance for a small set of continuous response variables, relative to comparable models using monthly image composites. Similarly, the overall accuracies of classification models using the estimated Fourier coefficients were approximately 10–20 percentage points higher than the models using the image composites, with corresponding individual class accuracies between six and 45 percentage points higher. [Termes IGN] krigeageRésumé : (auteur) A comparison of kriging and moving window kriging (MWK) on a sphere is performed on GNSS/levelling data. The study was to give the answer on whether there is a significant gain in prediction accuracy when we apply an MWK instead of ‘classical’ kriging and also to what extent the use of global geopotential model EGM2008 improves prediction. The quality of prediction for all kriging and data variants has been investigated on three regions (being on the territory of the conterminous USA) characterised with a different spatial extent and density of sampling. Numerical tests revealed that in case of high-sampling density there was no accuracy gain when using MWK instead of classical kriging (cK). In contrast, for less numerous datasets and a much larger spatial extent (low-sampling density) MWK adapts itself to data much better than cK. Incorporation of EGM2008-based undulations as a long-wavelength trend for both cases (classical and moving window) significantly improved prediction quality. However, existing methods introduce systematic errors in the area information and the landscape pattern. We developed an upscaling method fusing the spatial structure information (i.e., class Membership probability) and the uncertainty information of the base map (e.g., Confidence level probability), called Fusing class Membership probability and Confidence level probability (FMC). The results showed that FMC obtained higher upscaling efficiency, and mitigated the negative influence of landscape heterogeneity and the negative influence of unequal proportions of land cover in the base maps, on the upscaling compared to Majority Rule Based (MRB) method. Additionally, FMC can reduce the uncertainty/error when these upscaled maps are used as input to Earth observation model (e.g., land cover change). The main purposes of this hierarchy are to ease navigation of street maps and to provide more understandability and legibility of street features for map users. The hierarchy uses centrality measures along with functional classes of the streets to order features according to their spatial importance in each used zoom level. The calculation of a proper radius, to be employed in the calculations of centrality measures, is based on extracting proper field of view in the map user’s focus status. The used measures are integrated using fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process, yielding proper coefficients to create the hierarchy. The hierarchy is applied for the thinning process and later for using the styled layer descriptor to label street features. Quality constrains are implemented to make the street labels more understandable and readable. [Termes IGN] positionnement par GNSSMots-clés libres : Weibull distribution Résumé : (Auteur) This study examines the potential of airborne laser scanning (ALS) to predict diameter distributions in an even-aged plantation of Eucalyptus urograndis in Brazil. The single-species plantation conditions allow different modelling alternatives to be compared without the presence of minor tree species or an understory layer affecting the results. Three modelling alternatives based on the two-parametric Weibull function form; parameter prediction, parameter recovery and distribution matching were tested with a k-nearest neighbour prediction (k-nn) method. We also evaluated a parameter prediction alternative, in which the Weibull distribution was predicted using field attributes. The results showed that ALS information can predict diameter distributions with an error margin of slightly more than 10 per cent of the RMSE of the mean of the third power of diameter, and with error index values between 50 and 60. The degree of accuracy was only slightly improved when the Weibull distribution was predicted using field attributes. According to the accuracy metrics, the differences between modelling alternatives were minor but parameter recovery and k-nn seem to be the most favourable ALS-based prediction methods. To conclude, the results showed a strong relationship between ALS information and diameter distributions in a tropical single-species plantation and we discuss how these results could be applied in other types of forests.
