[Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution satellite images at sub-5-m footprint, such as IKONOS and SPOT5 HRG/HRS images, are becoming increasingly available to the earth observation community and their respective clients. The related cameras all use linear array CCD technology for image sensing. The processing of these kinds of images provides a challenge for algorithmic redesign and this offers the possibility of reconsidering and improving many photogrammetric processing components. This contribution presents an advanced matching approach for automatic DSM generation from high-resolution satellite images. It can provide dense, precise and reliable results. The method matches multiple (more than two) images simultaneously and it uses a coarse-to-fine hierarchical solution with an effective combination of several image matching algorithms and automatic quality control. The DSMs are generated by a combination of matching results of feature points, grid points and edges. The proposed approach has been applied to IKONOS images over a testfield in Thun, Switzerland with accurate ground control points, a 1600-m height range and variable land cover, but with sub-optimal imaging conditions (snow, long shadows). The accuracy tests are based on the comparison between the reference data from an airborne laser scanner and the automatically extracted DSMs. The RMS errors for the whole area, excluding trees and bushes, are 2-3 m, while for bare ground the accuracy is about 1 m or even better. [Termes IGN] UMLRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a common base-model for the classical object-based and field-based conceptual models in GIS. The model, which is called the PGOModel or 'Parameterized Geographic Object Model', is given a formal definition by using the UML modelling language. Within the scope of the paper, it has been shown that the PGOModel encompasses the classical object-based and field-based models. Two extensive examples demonstrate the application of the PGO model. The PGOModel seems ontologically well founded, except for the so-called PGOAtom concept.

[Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (Auteur) The ability to monitor and rapidly react to remote detection of volcanic activity has been greatly improved through use of the Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE), an advanced software application installed on a spacecraft in Earth orbit. ASE is a NASA New Millennium Program experiment demonstrating science-driven autonomous command and control of a spacecraft. Flying on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) spacecraft, ASE successfully detected thermal emission from the Mt. Erebus lava lake on 7 May 2004, having analyzed a Hyperion hyperspectral data product on board the spacecraft. EO-1 was re-tasked by ASE to obtain a follow-up observation 7 h later and sent a notification of detection of volcanic activity to the ground. The entire process was carried out autonomously. Initial acquisition to receipt on the ground of the positive detection took less than 3 h, a process that without ASE would have taken weeks. The ASE Thermal Classifier has detected several styles of effusive volcanic activity: active lava lakes, pahoehoe flow fields, open channel flows and lava domes. ASE successfully demonstrated that science-driven spacecraft operation greatly enhances science return per returned byte through the identification of the most valuable data, allowing prioritization of downlink products and the discarding of null data sets. This technology has applications on missions elsewhere in the solar system. Modified thermal classifiers can be used for detecting and monitoring active volcanism on the jovian satellite lo, the neptunian moon Triton, and searching for active volcanism on Mars and icy satellites. The success of ASE is an incentive for future instrument and mission designers to consider on-board data-processing requirements (especially data storage capacity, number of processors and processor speed, and RAM) in order to take advantage of this flight-proven technology. [Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) An approach and strategy for automatic detection of buildings from aerial images using combined image analysis and interpretation techniques is described in this paper. It is undertaken in several steps. A dense DSM is obtained by stereo image matching and then the results of multi-band classification, the DSM, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (ndvi) are used to reveal preliminary building interest areas. From these areas, a shape modeling algorithm has been used to precisely delineate their boundaries. The Dempster-Shafer data fusion technique is then applied to detect buildings from the combination of three data sources by a statistically-based classification. A number of test areas, which include buildings of different sizes, shape, and roof color have been investigated. The tests are encouraging and demonstrate that all processes in this system are important for effective building detection.
