[Termes IGN] Sousson (rivière)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a land cover classification methodology in agricultural contexts that provides satisfactory results with a single satellite image per year acquired during the growing period. Our approach incorporates ancillary data such as cropping history (inter-annual crop rotations), context (altitude, soil type) and structure (parcels size and shape) to compensate for the lack of radiometric data resulting from the use of a single image. The originality of the proposed method resides in the three successive steps used: S1: per-pixel classification of a single SPOT XS image with a restricted number of land cover classes (RL) chosen to ensure good accuracy; S2: conversion of RLs into a per-parcel classification system using ancillary parcel boundaries: and S3: parcel allocation using exhaustive land cover classes (EL) and its refinement through the application of decision rules. The method was tested on a 120 km2 area (Sousson river basin, Gers, France) where exhaustive knowledge of land cover for two successive years allowed complete validation of our method. It allocated 87% of the parcels with a 75% accuracy rate according to the exhaustive list (EL). This is a satisfactory result obtained with one SPOT XS image in a small agricultural parcel context. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) A hierarchical terrain recovery approach for generating digital terrain models (DTM) from single and multiple returns lidar data is presented in this paper. The algorithm can intelligently discriminate between terrain and non-terrain points by using adaptive and robust filtering and interpolation techniques. It processes the image pyramid, bottom-up and top-down, to estimate high-quality terrain surfaces from lidar data with varying point densities and scene complexities. Using road and vegetation information, the algorithm is able to adaptively adjust thresholds to be suited to process changing contents in a large scene. The algorithms have been tested extensively using multiple medium - and high - resolution lidar datasets. The worst-case error is below 25 cm Linear Error (LE) 90 comparing the derived DTMs and the raw range images on bare surfaces when testing several lidar datasets. [Termes IGN] objet homogèneRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a method of unsupervised enhancement of pixels homogeneity in a local neighborhood. This mechanism will enable an unsupervised contextual classification of multispectral data that integrates the spectral and spatial information producing results that are more meaningful to the human analyst. This unsupervised classifier is an unsupervised development of the well-known supervised extraction and classification for homogenous objects (ECHO) classifier. One of its main characteristics is that it simplifies the retrieval process of spatial structures. This development is specially relevant for the new generation of airborne and spaceborne sensors with high spatial resolution. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The discovery, interpretation, and presentation of multivariate spatial patterns are important for scientific understanding of complex geographic problems. This research integrates computational, visual, and cartographic methods together to detect and visualize multivariate spatial patterns. The integrated approach is able to: (1) perform multivariate analysis, dimensional reduction, and data reduction (summarizing a large number of input data items in a moderate number of clusters) with the Self-Organizing Map (SOM); (2) encode the SOM result with a systematically designed color scheme; (3) visualize the multivariate patterns with a modified Parallel Coordinate Plot (PCP) display and a geographic map (GeoMap); and (4) support human interactions to explore and examine patterns. The research shows that such "mixed initiative" methods (computational and visual) can mitigate each other's weakness and collaboratively discover complex patterns in large geographic datasets, in an effective and efficient way. [Termes IGN] Pays-BasRésumé : (Auteur) Thematic maps prepared from remotely sensed images require a statistical accuracy assessment. For this purpose, the k-statistic is often used. This statistic does not distinguish between whether one unit is classified as another, or vice versa. In this paper, the Bradley-Terry (BT) model is applied for accuracy assessment. This model compares categories pairwise. The probability of one class over another class is estimated as well as the expected values of class pixels. The study is illustrated with an Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer image from the Netherlands, to which a maximum-likelihood classification with the Euclidean distance is applied. An error matrix is generated using an IKONOS image from the same area as ground truth. It is shown to which degree the BT model extends the K-statistic. A comparison with the Mahalanobis distance is made. Standardization is carried out to overcome problems emerging from the fact that a common BT model does not include the number of correctly classified pixels. The study shows how the BT model serves as an alternative to the usual k-statistic.
